NBC BUSTED - NBC Photoshopped Photos of Lia Thomas to Make Her Look More Feminine

It's not left versus right here, but rather fact versus allegation.

Erica Denhoff can speak for her the difference for her photos, but cannot decide it must have been intentional and cannot determine if it was NBC Today that altered them, and she cannot determine for which reasons they were altered.

Again, my digital TV has a "Noise Reduction" setting which similarly smoothes out features. I can select "Low", "Medium" or "High". It doesn't seem unusual that someone along the way adjusted things like color balance, and reduced "noise", and the images of Lia Thomas were probably not the first photos altered in such a way.

No doubt the photos were altered, but we don't know, and Erica Denhoff doesn't know, where in the chain it was decided to reduce the noise, by whom, nor why.

The image is from a TV screen, it's not an original. You can add and change filters on TV's now. That's been a feature for a while.

If you wanted to, you could add a filter to your own TV, take a screenshot and then claim NBC have broadcast an edited image.

Considering how few people would have seen the original broadcast, are you absolutely sure that's not what's happened?

You really think a photojournalist doesn't know about "noise reduction"? These photos were not noise reduced from the TV. NBC removed the goggle lines amongst the other edits.

The fact is that NBC photoshopped journalist photos and spread fake photos as fact.

Think a little harder. It’s more than a non-issue. The debate is: “should males compete with females in sports?” By making him look female, you’re persuading the viewers to believe he is actually female because he looks female. Which makes them say it’s ok for him to compete with females because he’s actually a female. If you look at the actual picture, he’s more of a man than most Letsrun posters. If you showed the original to your audience, nobody could deny that’s a full blown male in the pool.

It’s not even on the same planet as airbrushing in magazines because, guess what? It’s not an athletic competition for females being won by a male.

Looking at the Today website, it seems like just about every photo is smoothed, including photos of men's faces. Seems like it's more standard operating procedure for a lifestyle-light news show than manipulation with intention to make more feminine looking.

It looks like the first photo had some awful filter applied to remove the goggle lines, it looks pretty poorly done but I'm not sure how it would be 'more feminine.' The second photo with the headphones, they should just be fired for that. All it did was take a decent well lit photo and make it look like she was coming out of a cave or something. It looks like her headphones became part of her hair. That's just bad editing all around. Not sure if they purposefully apply some filter to prevent image theft or if someone is just really bad at editing.

If I was the photographer, I'd be more upset if they credited me with those photos and everyone started thinking I was just a sh!t photographer which is I'm guessing why she was upset in the first place.

Adjusting a photo for things like color balance and brightness and noise reduction doesn't make it any more fake than the age old practice of retouching photos, something that photographers have been doing since 1846.

He definitely looks hotter in the second photo.

How many other airbrushed photos have we had threads about? Why don't you care about them? Go look at pretty much any photo published in the last 30 years and you get stuff like this done. Occasionally people go way over the edge and it gets called out. Most of the time we just ignore stuff like getting rid of goggle lines.

Obviously not edited to show more feminine...it was edited, as any good editor would do, to eliminate the lines and redness from the goggles. My god, right wing fanatics need to calm down. This is someone's job to edit photos, done every day, on every big website and TV service.

They look the exact same except a goggle line lol. I thought they photoshopped out a monster bulge or something.
