What are the Olympic rules as of today? In other words, if the Olympics happened right now, would Lia Thomas actually be able to compete in the Olympics?
Thomas is ineligible under the USA Swimming's new rule. She cannot swim in the Olympic or World Championships trial.
But Thomas told Sports Illustrated recently that Thomas is hoping to continue swimming competitively after college and hopes to make it to the Olympics. This was well after USA Swimming announced its new policy.
I wouldn't be surprised if the ACLU and other groups like the misnomered Human Rights Campaign already are preparing a lawsuit against USA Swimming alleging that its new "trans inclusion" policy is unfairly discriminatory. A major aim of the ACLU, HRC and many other supposedly "progressive" organizations today is to put an end to all sex segregation and safeguards meant to protect and provide fairness for those of the female sex, making all facilities and services either mixed sex or - if segregation continues to exist as it does now sports - to base the segregation on claimed gender identity, not on sex.
Also, given the various ways Thomas has been catered to by all the grownups in charge in the Penn administration and athletics department, the Ivy League and the NCAA; the way Thomas has been fawned over and lionized by the mainstream media; and the fact that the NCAA decided to bend the rules just for Thomas after USA Swimming announced its new relatively strict policy, I suspect Thomas believes and completely expects that sports governing bodies will continue to make exceptions for Thomas. After all, it's been reported in some press outlets that Thomas boasts of being "the trans Jackie Robinson."
Plus, there's nothing that makes some people with certain kinds of personalities feel more invincible, self-assured and convinced that they'll always get their way as much as the super high of narcissistic supply.
Thomas had an unfair biological advantage over the women he was competing against. It pure cheating. And none of the female athletes were free to openly object for fear of retaliation. Nor did their universities or the ncaa stand up for them.
This was an injustice and a farce. Does not matter if it gives a semblance of meaning to your empty life.
After all, it's been reported in some press outlets that Thomas boasts of being "the trans Jackie Robinson."
It hardly seems comparable. Jackie Robinson moved up to compete against better quality athletes. Lia Thomas moved down to compete against lesser quality athletes.
Hopefully it will not be allowed. What is even the point of having women's sports if a biological male who "identifies" as female gets to take an NCAA or an Olympic spot from a female athlete? And it is all coercive. There was no attempt at compromise or fair play here, no attempt at balancing or justice or equality, just crude identity power politics. The female athletes Thomas cheated were told to just shut up and accept being treated as second class citizens.
Lia is a she. She shouldn’t be allowed to compete, however. Pretty much everyone agrees. The hateful rhetoric used when discussing the subject is sad but expected.
