Tuohy had a great NCAAs. Read about the 3k here https://www.letsrun.com/news/2022/03/2022-ncaa-indoor-day-2-womens-recap-lindsey-butler-800-micaela-degenero-...
she did. she saw an opportunity and went for it, and won!
would have been a different outcome if tuohy wasnt boxed in or if someone went w roe's early surge
but as katelyn said earlier after the race, its her first track national championships and she'll take the 2 runner-up honors, she wanted to win the 3k, but it is what it is~
shes happy w this meet and she definitely surprised herself too, not only us!
If you looked at who was fresh coming into the race, it was pretty clear that either Roe or Ryan would have to make a big early move to gap those who were doubling back from the 5000. Pretty unforgivable to give Roe, who was even covered in bright orange for emphasis, that kind of gap, given how she did similar for 2nd in XC a year ago.
Tuohy now is getting a decent kick, but not good enough to leave it late like she did both times this weekend. I think she will have learned that lesson after this weekend.
I think she was on the limit in the 5000. A fresh Wayment was still a hair's breathe stronger at this stage in their careers. But in the 3000 that was a winnable race but she got boxed in and had to make a late run. That's a definite learning experience.
More inspiring IMO, was the girl that made a huge move 4 laps to go, gapped the field, and still hung on to win despite looking SHOT with 150m to go. Judging from their form and cadence at that point, it looked like there was no way she’s was going to hold them off.
i don't think Tuohy made a mistake in this race. She stayed in very smart position the whole race, it is just mind blowing that the front pack did not respond to Roe. Not even a little.
She could have run the outside lanes the whole race and been in better position to strike in that instance, but then people would be talking about how she ran 30 extra meters, like they did the night before.

“Would’ve won if she ran faster”
Roe took a huge risk to kick that hard so far out. It was a great performance. It was impressive and exciting to watch. Yet here we are talking about how great kicking in to second place was?

She ran the first turn in the penultimate lap way outside to get past 3 or 4 other girls. That extra distance probably cost her the win
Yes we are because it was. And what makes it more impressive is what Tuohy did in the 5000 the night before. Does Roe win if she ran the 5000 also? Does she win if Tuohy only ran the 3000? The answer is no on both counts. And even then if the field covered Roe's move earlier or if Tuohy did not get trapped on the rail, she had the fastest closing 600 in the race and would still have had a great chance to win. She almost did anyway. Look Roe ran a great, gritty race. She won fair and square. Posters on here said outright that one of the contenders who was only running the 3000 (Roe or Ryan or McCabe if she was healthy) would try to gap the runners who were doubling from the 5000 early. It was the smart move. Roe made the move and it paid off. She has the title. Hats off to her. But sorry, I don't think she was the most impressive runner in this race all things considered. And so what? Does not change the final result.
