Very long list of US runners who have skipped out on world indoors after getting a spot at USATF champs. Most do not want to have to peak so late in the spring and then have a pretty quick turn around to get ready for USATF outdoor champs and diamond league meets. Also, I would not want to be shipping off to Serbia in the current geopolitical climate.
Contract probably includes bonuses for US titles. Probably saw how weak the field was so did the quick flight to Spokane for a quick payday.
Exactly. Who knows how his contract is structured. Nike is known for not guaranteeing money & tying payouts to performance. Hocker is at a point in his life where he can probably thrive with that kind of structure even if it's something that works for very few athletes. He can go out & win almost any domestic race he enters. Get the bag while you can.
Pros not racing or not trying to race in any championship race is what is wrong with Track and Field at the Professional level. Pro track and field athletes want to be treated like NFL and NBA players monetarily but want to pick and choose when to compete. You can't have it both ways. If you want to make money you have to race. Quit dodging each other and start competing. Track needs to be more like Golf.

Yes it will. Racing in Feb. likely won't impact outdoor preparation. Racing in mid-late March will, particularly if you factor in travel to Belgrade. Centro raced (and won) World Indoors in 2016 but only because it was in Portland.

NBA players often sit out games to rest especially late in the season and especially if they are older players. Golf is not quite as hard on the body as track.

It's not like racing one or more time at worlds will hamper his training for outdoors in Eugene. What was the point? Everyone knew he could win the 1500 and 3k at US indoors anyways.
You gotta listen tom the wise ones and pace yourself. Don't burn yourself out doing every filler meet until the Paris Olys. Hocker did the right thing.
Why did Shelby Houlihan routinely double at indoor and outdoor national championships? Athletes quite often have national championship bonuses in their contracts. Double the championships, double the money. Not worth compromising outdoor preparation for a next to meaningless indoor championship in Eastern Europe.

I agree with you but- Track and Field has multiple championships and we can only train for and peak so much.
You can play golf every day you can't race too often and expect to always be at your best.
