seeing Teare at the NCAA cross finals makes me question whether his potential is better for 1500 or 5000.
It could have just been one of those days, but if you are really a 5k guy, aren't you gonna look a little better in a 10000?

Read this fact. Teare is the fastest NCAA miler in history. You can't dispute the fact which means that he is a miler. He is the absolute fastest miler. Facts.
There is a difference between a fast miler and a true miler. For a true miler that distance will be their best event. Geb won an indoor 1500 WC but he was not a true miler. I think Teare's best event is probably 3000.

The last time he ran the NCAA XC meet in 2019 (when he was 19) he placed 6th. I think it's pretty safe to say that crawling to the finish line for 247th was not indicative of his best.
I think because of Cole’s success at the trials/NCAA’s in 2021 Cooper has really gotten underrated. I think if he consistently races the 1500 in a season we could see big things, whether that’s his best event yet is tbd. 3:50 mile and 13:12 5k pr’s as a 22 year old aren’t too shabby
Teare is a miler. I don't think you guys know what the word true means. Whatever it means to you, if he isn't a true miler he has to be an untrue miler. What does that mean for the fastest miler in NCAA history?

Why is it so important for you to label him as a miler? No one is saying he is not fast at the mile or he should not run the 1500. The question is whether it will end up being his best event.
Milers are adapted to kick hard in mile/1500m races. Guys like Kejelcha and Rupp can run fast time trial races at the distance without being able to compete in slower tactical affairs. They race miles to work on their speed for the 3k and 5k. That's why Al Sal trained Farah to run a good mile so that he could win championship races at 5000m-10000m.
This is not to say that Cooper Teare is not a miler. He showed that he can kick pretty well at the distance off of a fast pace. He has never had the 25 second last 200m speed that the really special guys have, but he can hit 26s.

True miler is implying he's a mile specialist, regardless of speed. Running only the 5,000 at trials is not something a true miler would usually do. Time will tell though.
Which is why Eamon was never a miler. Milers don’t win WC 5k while never medaling in the mile
I don't understand where all of this Teare isn't a true miler stuff is coming from. He's always been a miler. UO was loaded with similarly talented milers so they put him in longer stuff to maximize points. He ran the 5000m at the trials so he and Hocker had better chances to make the team. Just because he seems to excel at TT types of races doesn't mean he doesn't have wheels enough to win races.
It's also absurd that people hope to see international caliber 1500m races being won in 3:35+ sit-n-kick affairs. If you want to win, you'd better be fit enough to run much faster. And if you can run much faster why wouldn't you?
Teare is a 1,500/5k runner. He's great at both events. It's not one or the other.
Is Hassan a true miler then? She holds the world record but won the 5k and 10k. Jager is a steepler but made a 5k team and ran 3:32. Why would you want to be “a true miler” when the best runners are versatile?

He has always been a miler yes, his senior year of high school he attempted to break 4 like 4 times running 4:00, 4:01, 4:02, 4:01 I believe and only attempted a fast two mile at Arcadia and the state meet. His greatest success in the NCAA was in the mile and he has two 3:50s to his name. Letsrun fanboys may see a 13:12 and crap in their pants, but I think it’s pretty easy to tell what Teares favorite event is.
