That's even a bit much for me. I think it's right to think about how we cover female milers & (mostly) non-white runners who break barriers at other distances. Maybe we can do more to highlight when similar barriers are broken. But there is rightfully a lot of attention on sub-4's. It's impressive. I don't think focusing on the mile instead of the 1500 has much to do with anything other than a system of math & a nice, round, number.

I wonder what percentage of these articles/ comments are actually written satirical ly or by trolls. I find that people nowadays on the internet get really deep into satire that it almost becomes a reality for them, and this goes for even the average commenter. You ever get worked up by a post and mid-furious comment you realize o crap maybe this guy is effing with us.

It isn't the mark of an world class runner anymore. Despite that, it is celebrated way more than a 10.5 100m or a 4:20 women's 1500m is. Would anyone disagree with that? It's not even an Olympic event but the interest in it surpasses many events that are.

That's because in the past it was a major achievement but during an era when track was dominated by European men. In East Africa, a sub 4 mile doesn't have the same history. In fact they don't even know what a mile is, it's all kilometers.

If you think it’s an “atrocious” take, why glorify it with the title of your post? And why post the link which disseminates this “racist” take? I think I know why. Count me as someone who did not take the click bait.

People tend to be overlooking the sexism that is exposed by the referenced article. Perhaps we need to encourage more women (or find some converts) to go sub-four. We need to identify those resources that women need to go sub-four and make sure women have equal access to those resources. The gender discrimination that is the 4-minute barrier must be breached in a fashion similar to breaking the glass ceiling.

I mean...sub-4 1500 barrier is right there for women, sure it's significantly harder (9 US women, ever) but there's your special barrier

Melly has jumped the shark. The notion that we have to reduce everything to a racial lens has become so pervasive that it takes away from *actual* problems related to race, racism, etc. There's nothing wrong with celebrating 4 minute miles without regard to race.

Takes like these are merely attempts to garner kudos from an extremely small subset of the internet crowd, and to appear more enlightened than the rest of the supposed dunces that populate America. It's sort of sad to see Melly try so, so hard in his tweets and takes to be edgy and informed. It must be exhausting. Just live your life dude.

I can't believe I just upvoted a Steve the Addict post, but I agree with some of what he said here. I don't think the media is all bad, but it is definitely a business and much of what they choose to report on is chosen, or reported on in such a way to sensationalize news, to get more viewers, get more clicks, sell more papers, etc. The media definitely props up certain narratives because it sells.
