3000: Teare 3 - Hocker 1 (although Hocker beat him when it counted, while doubling back)
5000: Hocker 2 - Teare 1 (although Teare won at NCAAs, but Hocker was doubling)
Weird to think that Hocker has the edge in the 5000 and Teare has the edge at the shorter distances (and has never lost a 1500/mile to Hocker).
I am a broken record (and maybe wrong) but the way I see it is Hocker has outkicked Teare in the slower paced races (NCAA 3,000, Pac 12 5,000 for example) but in the faster paced races Teare gets ahead of him and he can't pass him on the kick.
Yeah I think Cooper is still a lot stronger, which is no surprise given how low-mileage Hocker was pre-college. I think Hocker may be able to get that strength (2nd at NXN and FL Champion show that could be the case) but who knows. I think Hocker’s big issue in this particular race was allowing Teare to pass. He needed to run that Farah/Centro style and just refuse to give up the lead and make the other guy go wide. I think he was afraid to kick that hard that early but letting Teare come around and then having to pass again indoors is pretty impracticable.
That said, I think that runs would’ve broken Teare’s collegiate record had Hocker stayed in school so it’s a good run for sure.
I do think his form could use some work but I am not a US Champ/multi-time NCAA Champ.
This wasn’t a race, this was a time trial. And not even streamed properly. This is why Track and Field can’t gain a following. What other sport builds up a “record breaking attempt” with a tiny field and doesn’t show it/advertise it. So dumb.
Go easy, man. They really tried. The Big 10 prevented the livestream broadcast on YouTube. Remember that the first sub 4 mile in 1954 was also a time trial with a tiny field. If you’re looking for the glamour and accolades that mainstream pro sports provides, I’m afraid you’ll be very disappointed to know that will not ever happen.
It was the US Olympic Trials. But he’s only run the Olympics and these two indoor races since then.
So nearly a year since he's actually won a race?
Yes 9 months since he became US champion, with only the Olympics and two early indoor races since then. But keep tearing down one of the bright young talents of our sport!

He pretty much got shown exactly his place in the Olympics though
Maybe if people hadn't been bigging him up so much.
Cole MF Hocker,is up there with 2600 man for stupidest saying put on here.

Huh? We were told in no uncertain terms he was a "3:35 guy" (who then went and ran 3:31 in the final). I don't know who expected him to do much better than 6th if the race was fast (which everyone seemed to think it would be). I'm sure there were some, but not many.
Will definitely be interesting to see what Cooper choses to run this year. I think he probably felt pressured into the 5k route last year because of the team dynamic. it possibly started at ncaa indoors where he ran the 3k to lock up a win/maximize points (but cole did the unexpected and just won both races). then it was a similar story at ncaa outdoors. cole felt confident in doubling and cooper went all in of the 5k where it paid off. if he ran the 1500 at the trials i think he gets the spot over nuguse last year tbh, but its not like he wasnt close to making the 5k team either way. he has shown to be on par with cole for the most part over 1500 and probably was in 331-332 shape at his peak last year. i think both of them have a bright future over a variety of distances tho.

Yeah the olympics sure showed him!
You are only in the top 8 1500m runners in the world, smashed the previous Olympic record, didn’t get the NCAA record on a technicality, and were 19 years old at the time. Know your place, TRASH!

The way people on here were going on,he was Coe and Ovett wrapped in one.Cole MF Hocker because he got through a slow heat.

Yes he did get shown his place. That’s what a race is for. 6th in ze world.
Hocker’s last all out indoor mile effort and now 4 years later Hocker is a 3:45 miler. He looks like a completely different and much stronger runner than 4 year ago.
