With 3 hard sessions a week, and 35-40 mins of total warmup and cooldown per session, I'd be forgetting around 15 miles of running every week. Of course, if you never account for it I guess it doesn't change anything, but I'd rather track the real mileage.
Yep. Always 2 up, at least 1.5 down. Now, if I were doing track work where I had 90s recovery, I'm not counting the jogging done during that.

I do an 800 warmup every day, that doesn't count. I do a 2 mile warmup before workouts I do count. Cooldown post workouts don't count.
Miles are miles. Warm ups & cool downs count. 2-3 miles for both.
Duh. You think pros are hitting 120 miles per week WITHOUT counting warmups/cooldowns? If you do 10 sessions a week thats at least 20 miles.

When I begin running, I turn my watch on. When I finish, I turn my watch off.
Whatever the watch says is my total distance, is what I count (because garmin connect does the counting for me).

Stewart McSweyn (3:29 -1500m, 7:28 - 3000m, etc...) doesn't run with a GPS watch. He's pretty serious about running.

Mileage is mileage when it comes to totals. Even elites do the majority of their mileage at low intensity and they count them. When they say they run 140 miles per week, you really think that's only interval and tempo mileage, and they're really running 300 miles per week and leaving the easy miles out of the totals? Of course not. As long as you're running, slow, fast or somewhere in between, all miles are counted.

Typically I'll do 10 min on either side. For a recovery day or easy day, I count those miles. It doesn't really make a difference, unless I'm dragging my feet. On quality days, I do not count those miles or time,
For years I only counted what I timed and I never timed my warm-ups. Once I even got into an argument with another runner because he was counting the warm-up. My argument was that the workout was a timed 5 mile run. So we ran 5 miles. The warm-up didn't count. Baseball pitchers don't count their warm-up throws as part of their pitch count. Finally I realized I knew no one else who didn't count their warm-up miles. so I now count them if I count miles. But I rarely count miles because I found that I just do an extra super slow mile at the end to reach a number. That extra mile doesn't mean as much as if I ran an extra mile as part of the main timed workout and it might leave me extra tired and impact the next workout. Who cares about the total miles? The real concern is the quality workouts per week and yiu don't want too many in order to avoid injury and burnout.
If it's for instagram, you even count the 50m you walked for your 30s rest between reps. You count the 200m wall back to the car. You convert all your stair climbing mileage to running mileage.
Otherwise, no. Short warm ups and cool downs dont count. Counting the 1 mile I run to the park to do my interval training is obnoxious
I'm a semi pro (3:36 1500) often accused of chasing too many junk miles. I count all jogging. Warmups and cooldowns normally around 4 miles. I run 110-120 mpw. I believe there are guys I race against getting by on 30-40 mpw including warm up and warm down. However, their training is simply completely different. For them, junk miles do nothing. For me, as an aerobic focussed runner, it matters
