It just didn’t happen. He’d occasionally hop in races at Eastern Mich or UofM (flat tracks at the time), run the national leading time, and then travel to nationals where he’d win by a significant margin.

Webb getting in that indoor Mile and running 3:59 his senior year was wild because you never saw high school kids getting in those high profile races.

Does this make German Hernandez the best ever then. He had ZERO help

On the track, he has to be considered for top few, for sure. His historic 4:00/8:34 double - winning both by a ton, as you point out - was run at ~17 years 6 months. Followed it up with the 8:34 2M a couple weeks later, dropping Puskedra and Lowe? shortly after halfway.

It’s a shame he didn’t start school a year later.

Exactly right. Indoor just wasn’t something focused on by Midwest HS kids then. Still isn’t that high of a priority.

It’s incredibly silly of people to think that because of Houghs 14:49 at the Michigan state meet indicates anything at all about the runninglane course. All it shows is that Hough didn’t have competition in his race. Duh. Guess what cooper Teare 4:00/8:41 guy in hs ran at Woodward Park his senior year? 14:59. Fast, but not anything extraordinary. He was capable of sub 14:50, maybe even under 14:40. Because not everyone runs at 100% unless there is enough competition for them. Anyone smart has been saying wait for the track times to prove the RL course right. You will see in time(and hopefully now, after 3:58, 7:57, 8:01) that what happened on that day was the absolute greatest high school cross country team ever hammered a hard pace from the start of the race and a ton of guys who had never run that fast before kept up because it was nationals and they knew they were part of something historic.

Anyway, Ritz is no longer on the all time indoor top 10 list

Gorze’s (6th at Eastbay) 8:11.38 is now 10th on the list

Ritz would have run close to 8 flat or better on a banked track in HS, with help. He crushed Webb in XC who ran 8:45 on a crappy flat track , the following indoors, beating Nate Brannen who was a sub 4 HS guy. By 14 seconds

This was 20, 20 years ago. he(Ritz) had zero set up races except chasing a 5K mark at Penn one year. His Michigan State record where guys 2 and 3 are in the 14:50's high , of 14:10 2 will stand for a very long time. It is most likely the most dominant HS XC mark on a time tested course of all time.

He never ran at the Armory in HS , if Webb had run his two mile at the Armory he would have run 8:42 again , flat to banked, and no help, 20 years ago. So do that math, again, no Pros in that race. So do the math on that, to 3K . NO pacers. He could have chased anything at that point.

He certainly could have run today's NP marks, anyone who thinks otherwise is also challenged or they never saw him in person, His 8:45 on that Md. flat track which was not even remotely fast, was insane. Again 20+ years ago.

In my own Opinion:

Since most , most of these marks, occur in really well set up races, opinion, and I saw both Webb and Ritz in person multiple times in HS . I believe that Ritz with pacing surely would have run under 8:00, Webb as well. Webb ran 1:47.7x to 8:45 yards Indoors. None of these guys were ever beating him, that just is. And it was , did I say? 20! Years ago.

Just my opinion, it's just the math.

Guys should be running faster 20 years later, that counts for everyone, and they, The NP guys are all time good guys. No doubt, especially the miler, who surely can run 7:56 or better.

The guy who always deserves credit in any discussion is a young German Fernandez on the track, 8:34 yards with no help at all, in Hot Greensboro, in HS which surely converts lower than 8 flat and then his 3:55 and 7:47 frosh 18year old year.

The track was short. Need a steak tape measurement of the indoor track. We need to know how the track was built. We need a transparent process of how the track was measured or it doesn’t count. No such thing as records because everyone indoor track is different.

I agree. Even college coaches were bitching and moaning about how the course was short and that there was no way anyone could’ve possibly touched Ritz’s record. Everyone complaining is just jealous that Brosnan has a high school team better than most college teams. He’ll probably end up in the college ranks from the work he’s done grinding it out at the high school level. Good for him and good for his team.

So Ritz was so much faster than Rupp (8:12 on oversized track) and Ches (8:05) at 3000m in HS. I didn’t realize he had such wheels…

It’s strange that with such wheels that he is not even on the University of Colorado’s top 10 list.

How fast would he have been indoor for the mile in HS?

All things considered, 8:40 on a 11 lap to the mile wood track with primitive spikes is the best 3000m or two mile ever run by a high schooler. The legendary Gerry Lingren.

That is such a freakish record even by Gerry standards (his best mile was 4:01 at the time), that I wonder if he didn't have an Eammon Coghlan thing where he was actually faster those little wooden tracks.
