Patrick Mahomes HR and Calories Burned vs Bills - Does this sound right?

6'3 230 isn't "fat" he's a football player not a distance runner.

They ran less than 60 plays. Even if Mahomes scrambled for 400 yards on every play he would have only managed 13 miles in the game. I doubt he ran more than 3 miles the entire game.

I would wager to guess that about 95% of wrist based HR sensors read way to high especially during an activity where your heart rate fluctuates. If Mahomes used a chest strap I would almost guarantee that his HR reading would have been at least 10 beats lower.

I've used several different wrist based HR watches and other devices over the years and they do a very poor job in reading HR when I tested them during an interval workout, whereas a chest strap HRM is not going to have those phantom spikes in HR reading.

I absolutely believe the HR numbers. 160 really isn't that high, and we are all treating Mahomes like he's a distance runner. Dude probably hasn't run more than 3 miles consecutively in years. I 100% believe that in a high stress environment (and considering the type of quarterback he is) his HR was on average in the 140-160 range.

What I don't believe is the calories. Not a chance in the world he burned over 2500 calories in a football game. If I did a 2 hour long run I don't think I would be close to 2000cal burned, and that's after 120 minutes of consistent movement. Even if that number is taking pregame warmups into account, there is no possible way he burned that many calories.

Side note: this reminds me of when Lebron's athletic trainers says he loses on average 9-11 pounds from playing an NBA game. I don't know if that was the exact weight change, but it was something absurd like that. Anyone else remember that?

Regarding his HR, he's 26. He's not some old has-been runner.

In my last long run I burned 1,530 calories (20 miles) in 2:16:42 and average HR of 141. I am around 180 pounds. My HR reading and calories burned came from my Polar HR chest strap which is seen as the gold standard. I'm guessing Whoop overestimates calories burned just like Garmin.

But it's a 3 hour game and he was sitting, standing still, or walking for 2 hours and 55 minutes of it.

Unless his resting heart rate is 159 there's no chance those numbers are for the whole 3 hours.

What is absurd about some 275lb guy losing 10lbs? I know I have weighed 6lbs less after hockey games and that is after drinking 32oz of fluid. And I am not close to 275🙂.

The calories seem high but we are talking 230lbs+ player with like 10lbs of gear over 3.5 hours. It is high but not absurdly high. i would have guessed more likem1500-2000. I would guess the algorithm is making assumes about physical activity an heart rate that arent holding in high stress environments.

the 170BPM quote is a bit over-the-top. I was in the army '12-'16, there were other guys who were runners and on-occasion would wear some type of HRM or fitbit during live-fire exercise(this before the whole strava heatmap scandal). Sustained heart rates >165BPM were very normal for extended periods of time, this being while wearing some level of ballistically protective kit (usually a plate carrier, helmet, and knee pads - which the army considers "ballistically protective" but I do not), as well as their mission-specific kit (I did some low-level chem and battlefield forensics in addition to my job as a grenadier) - usually somewhere between 15 and 35 pounds depending on how smart you were about packing.

Fine motor skills were rarely an issue for very long. The competency-level skill recruitment threshold is significantly lower than this article's tone implies. "Flight or fight" implies, as it does in most places, a reduction in the complexity of thought patterns.

More often than not, the individuals that were displayed to me in that environment as having poor motor skills were usually suffering from stress-based composure issues as opposed to encountering a legitimate cognitive threshold. This was commonly - and I argue now, incorrectly - retrained through various stress-inoculation measures such as "smoking" or small-scale skills-specific retraining focused on training the individual to be more durable against such failures.

Most people I have encountered in the general population do not like threshold running. It hurts. It is uncomfortable long before it is over, and becomes invariably worse throughout the training session. As is designed. Maintaining your composure, your "patience in the pack" as some coaches have referred to it in front of me; this composure allows you to ascend above transactional and linear thought patterns while stressed. You can recruit those fine motor skills simply by being exposed to the task repeatedly.

"Lose control of their bladder and bowels" yeah if you're weak-willed. And if you are? try hard and get better. Don't crap your pants because running hard is too hard for your little broken heart to take. IF you crap your pants while running, you're trying too hard (caveat - this does not include the "I had lil squeazers/sketchy tex-mex/hole-in-the-wall-chinese-you're-not-used-to" poor decision making based crap-by-the-side-of-the-road) and you probably need to stop. Running literally just isn't for some people, and if this article describes you, the "I can't handle it when my forearms go numb after running 600's because that's scary so I crapped my pants out of fear" type of person? get a job, buy a rowing machine, go for a walk. etc.

Stress-based heart rate increases are always coupled with increased caloric burn. see attached, regarding chess players, people who aren't usually fine-tuned athletic specimens (but in this case, I dunno; ~600cal/hour for an event like the superbowl makes sense to me)

Just cause he's presenting jovially doesn't mean he isn't stressed. Especially because he's a leader on the team. I think that's why people respect him so much...just a hunch tho

There's level of stress... if you were actually a soldier you should realize this. You don't feel the same level of stress on the FOB as you do in combat... or even on patrol...

If you poke around with what I've said on the site, you'll understand my sincerity when I say: I do not care if I live or die. I welcome death because it would be a relief from having to think so much. I wasn't afraid because I am crazy. I didn't have to be stressed because I was okay with whatever happened.

In patrick's case? He has a wife and I think a kid (could be wrong)? Not to mention a ton of people relying on him to deliver something in the way of a successful game because their entire infrastructure of life depends on him (the whole team - and the company supporting the team- needs a quarterback that can make passes, if he doesn't make pass they don't get paid, etc).

I don't care about america, I didn't then. I didn't care about the soldiers working around me, or whatever happened to them. To be completely honest, I emotionally and morally disengaged from the situation the moment I signed up. It's just a job, if I don't do it right - then I die. It's an "if __, then __" predication, not one that I really have a whole ton of control over.

Patrick Mahomes is, in-essence, in control of the situation. That's real stress.

Now let's put me and him in context, since you want to compare the levels of stress.

When I deployed (4 year contract, single deployment), I was an E-2 and was promoted to E-3 while there (later E-4 upon returning home). I was a footsoldier. There were soldiers in my company (120 ish dudes) who didn't know my name. One guy in my platoon that refused to learn it "you don't deserve to have a name." I'm also the younger of two middle children and a high school dropout. My family really couldn't care less what happens to me.

Patrick Mahomes is a household name. If he isn't there, he's getting close. Not on Tony Hawk or Michael Jordan level, but maybe one day? Everyone is going to know if he screws up. He will not be able to hide from it. Imagine a "buffalo bills kicker" - esque situation from their SB run in the 90's. You are at the peak of social fame and acceptance - he's a less-political and better-at-football colin kaepernick - and he could drop to the absolute rock bottom at any second.

I don't want to imagine that level of stress. I intentionally de-stress my life by doing a whole hell of a lot of keeping myself grounded through negative self talk. I believe he got close to 2400 cal in 4 hours, doesn't surprise me one bit.

Those HR numbers don’t make sense. What about the Tour deFrance cyclists that keep their HR above 170 on mountain stages for HOURS? Some of those mountain stages are between 6 & 8 hours long.

I think you're confusing immaturity with mental illness and your military tales don't pass the sniff test.

Regardless of your personal situation normal people experience levels of stress. It isn't simply stress or no stress.

I cannot imagine how he could have burned 2400 calories in four hours with so little activity, and that stuff about what happens to the body with hr's of 140 and up was completely bogus--we're not old enough to be losing bladder control in workouts and races at 150-160-170 hr. However, the heart rate--probably not that high--being something more reasonable like 130-140 for the game could be reasonable because of the enormous stress involved. Stress does remarkable things. My upper blood pressure (systolic) was measured at 167 at the dentist after a week of dealing with too much pain to sleep much at all from an abscess.

He is young, not that aerobically fit/fatigued at the end of the game, uses the very best stimulants (and perhaps other PEDs) before and during the game, was excited with stress/anxiety /adrenaline, was doing some high intensity anaerobic activity, weighs 230 lbs., was carrying around extra weight of pads and equipment, was likely dehydrated etc. so the high average heart rate is possible. Especially with the drugs and possible heard palpitations.

states that body motion might lead to inaccurate heart rate readings. Jumping around, getting hit, falling down, knocking helmets and bodies in celebration might add some extra false heart rates.

Calories burned is just an estimate. I believe the estimate from that device is high.

Don't worry, if you are reading this you will probably be able to easily beat Mahones in a 5K.
