Ps in the words of the great Steve Agar to us fringe runners, “ why suck at the 5k when we can just suck at the 1500m “ and I sucked at the 5k. So why suck at the marathon? I can just enter an 800m and suck ?

The meet that year has an incredibly stacked 2mile as they were going after the American record. All the $$ and the studs moved up to that distance. So I won the mile in the weakest year in the last 30 years. Obviously brilliant timing on my part. That and I paid Atkinson not to run that year.

Not really sure. Not very much. Maybe 30k US. No big pay days, right after college Ben Johnson got caught for drugs and all the money dried up for Canadians. Until the real studs Sullivan and Hood came along. They got real money. Chasing money for runners can be detrimental ( at least that’s what I say since I didn’t get much ).
I going appearance fee for a road Mile was expenses and 1k US. And I used to be astounded that I would get paid a grand to just run down the street for a mile no matter how I did.
But we can’t re run our careers can we? I would have run faster, beat more guys, ate more ice cream and gone to Australia to train because they have nice beaches

McDonell was just the absolute motivator!!
My sophomore year I broke 4 min on a relay. 3:57 1600m. So Johny Mac says come by the office Monday morning.
Now I am thinking I am pretty good now, I broke 4. . So I go in. Mac says that’s pretty good kid, but look, Frank, Donny, Maloney, Nial, Taylor, etc etc have all done that so who cares. You still have a lot of work to do. A lot. But let me tell you kid, you are going to run 3:50 for the mile! You are going to get an Olympic medal in the steeplechase! But you have to train harder!! Let’s go out and do it!
So I go to practice on Monday, and instead of being the big sub 4 miler, I am instead realizing I have a lot of with to do and I am pumped to work harder. What brilliant coaching.

Also, we both know you could have run sub 8:20 in the steeple if you hadn't wasted your time in the 1500.
