Fair enough. Maybe some communication ahead of the fact would have been a good idea. We honestly just don't talk that much (maybe see each other once every few years and don't tend to call or text in between), so it wouldn't have just come up in conversation and I would have had to make a phone call for that sole purpose. I guess it just didn't seem like a big enough deal to do so.

Classic example of everyone sucks here.

People who do nice things for others and then whine about not being "thanked" are pathetic. It shows your true nature, you only do nice things to be validated by others and rewarded with thanks/appreciation. The fact you want/need this from 10 year olds is even more pathetic. You say "no hard feelings" from my side, but you certainly don't come across that way.

The fact you have been tracking whether or not these kids have sent you "thank you" texts is pretty pathetic.

Your brother is also a huge loser. Blowing up at someone for not giving them a gift (especially when you don't reciprocate) is extremely entitled and pathetic.

I'm glad I'm not involved in this family.

Hmm...I see what you're saying, but I think there's a difference between doing nice things with the expectation of being thanked, and simply withdrawing from a consistently one-sided relationship.

If I cook my wife's favorite meal for her tonight, I don't expect her to profusely thank me and immediately do something nice for me in return. If I do nice things for my wife every day and she never once says "thank you" or does anything thoughtful for me, then our relationship is in trouble. Expecting a relationship to be a two-way street isn't the same thing as whining about not being thanked.

However, if no one in his family is participating or reciprocating, that's a different story, and your response is totally reasonable.

Only thing I could suggest is trying to have an adult conversation with your brother about future gift giving at Christmas. Make it clear that you stopped giving his kids gifts because your brother never went out of his way to give your children gifts so you decided to stop making an effort. Unless you already attempted to have that discussion and just wouldn't listen. Maybe your brother will reconsider his behavior and how he reacted to you on the phone. There could also be something deeper going on that he got so angry, but then again the holidays tend to bring out odd behavior within families.

Otherwise move on with your life, family drama is not worth it.

That said, the more mature response would be to say

"Hey brother, your sister and I noticed that we never hear anything from you after we give your family holiday gifts and we don't recieve anything from you either. We were wondering if perhaps you might not want to be part of the whole holiday gift exchange thing. We know it isn't for everyone."

All of a sudden not getting your family gifts after many years is a pretty passive-aggressive thing to do. It's always better to be direct and honest. After saying the above, he might be a bit defensive, but I doubt he'd explode. He probably didn't even realize he was doing anything wrong.

If I were you, I'd apologize for your passive-aggressive behavior, and say "I'm sorry, I should have asked you if you wanted to participate in a gift exchange where our families mutually exchange gifts and/or gratitude, and not assumed that you were opting out this year. I was wrong and I should have talked to you first. Next year how about we both get our families gifts. There is no need to buy anything. You can make cards yourself or find free goods from craigslist if you like. It's the thought that counts."

Clearly the OP is a Russian troll that finally got sucked into Letsrun as being his place to vent. Eastern European Xmas just happened. This did happen and was angry and then vented on the best outlet he could think where he we get a lot of debate over a completely stupid post. Now here we are on Letsrun, two whole pages later still debating about whether or not it is ok for some Russian guy bailed on his family members at Xmas time. The real message is that Letsrun as finally become such a great thread for dumping you personal emotions on that even the Russian trolls drunken over the holidays resort to using it as their outlet.

Also, when the troll hunter above posted, it had been 14 hours since the preceding post. This thread was probably on the second page by that point.

If you think a thread is a troll thread, why not just let it "fade into Bolivian" in the words of our favorite scholar and boxer? Why bump a thread just to call the OP a troll?
