Everyone has their own methodology in terms of success concerning fitness and running. Running huge mileage can strengthen your core so I can see Jim’s point. There’s More than one way to train however.

Depends what you mean by core.

If you think doing 1000 ab crunches a day will make you a better runner in any way then you are probably mistaken.

However if you do 30 minutes of hip strength a day, with an exercise band and just your own bodyweight, you will reduce your likelihood of injuries compared to doing nothing.

All the muscles around the hip help to create stability in your form and prevent you from overusing anything. It helps keep balance.

These exercises won't make you run faster (unless you are really weak), they won't make you bulk up, they simply help your hips to be stable and strong and have good flexibility at the joints

This is just stating what experts like Jack Daniels, Jay Dichary, etc. have been saying for years. Running is a core exercise. Core is NOT abs. The best core trainer there is: Back Squats.

I'm in my 50s and used to think like this, but it's wrong. Guys that are a. good looking or b. fit get orders of magnitude more opportunities than guys that are c. ugly or d. fat

Personality and game can compensate for fat, but for ugly there's not much hope.

The problem is there are a lot of high school and college coaches who think core is doing 1k crunches a day. Doing that isn't going to help much, and can be counter productive because it is a waste of time and energy if your athletic goal is to run long distances faster.

It's only "useless" if you already have a solid core...

If you have a weak core it will lead to imbalance and injury.

There's a reason the greats usually make terrible coaches.

Seems to me that based on gender, weight, race distance and the goal time one is training for, there is a sufficient level of strength in the core, glutes, hip flexors, quads and hamstrings necessary to stay healthy and respond to the training plan. If a runner is sufficiently strong and can maintain that strength without any specific additional work, then it may be useless. For the many runners who are weak, training may be useless without it. It seems like when a runner wants to know whether or not they need to do strength work, they're rarely asked how strong they are already. Weird to me.
