Yakob has said he hates training and he cant see himself competing at an elite level 10 years from now. If hes the GOAT level talent that people say he is then he should be able to compete at an elite level well into his 30s, but hes saying he doesnt want to. Who knows if he'll last 10 more years with that attitude. He might burn out before then.

There cyclists, swimmers and other distance runners that train extremely hard that aren't the best in the world. There are distance runners train for years just to get a qualifying time for the OT marathon. He can whine about it, but to not compete through the 2028 Olympics would be a disgrace.

You didn't answer my question; would you walk away from that kind of talent and wouldn't it disgust you if he did?

I would like to say I wouldnt, and I also wouldnt view someone who would favorably. If hes the real deal, he should be able to keep building on his legacy past the age of 30 and if he doesnt want to then that seems like a waste.

If he leaves after 28, he is basically running the same timeline as El Guerrouj

Pete Sampras hated the amount of practice required for tennis and talked about quitting the sport starting in his early 20s and Agassi actually hated tennis but both played into their 30s.

In the age of professional sports, Jakob quitting in the middle of his prime would be unprecedented.

It’s true, but we would have written the same of Herb Elliott. People with immense success many times dont realize how fortunate they have been. It is also true that if the love Id not present, then it is only like a job (as he states). When he reaches the paramount of success, perhaps he will choose another venue to spend his energy in. All of norway is proud of him.

Unlikely he will quit even if he doesnt like running solely because of money.

Yes he might already have some good savings already. But assuming he keeps on winning, he is going to make a lot.

Many pro athlete hate their sport. Nadal hates tennis yet here he is at 35 yo still among the absolute best.

I don't think that will happen again when they're both sharp. Maybe at the end of a long season or when Ingebrigtsen is ill. He got a lot better this year. I can see him losing to Kiplimo in World or Olympic (!!) XC, but not on the track from 1500 to 5000m.

Does anyone think he might go for the steeple WR? Was his steeple technique any good when he did it? If so, he ought to be capable of breaking 8 minutes. How hard would it be for him to pick up this record?

1:46 is a good as it gets for Jakob, therefore 5000m and 10k XC.

I think you underestimate Jakob´s potential in the 800m.

I predict he at least can go sub 1:45 as Centro and Engels did.

I don´t think it is a question about EITHER the 1500m OR the 5000m. If Jakob avoids illness and injury coming out to the next season at least in the same shape as in 2021 he will certainly go for the double in Eugene.

The program in Eugene is perfect with 1500m finished before the qualifying heat in the 5000m. He would possibly also have gone for the double in Tokyo if the program had allowed it.

And Jakob will possibly also go for the double in Paris in 2024 if he is still active at that time.
