What "smaller towns" have held the summer Olympics? They have always been held in major cities. And Atlanta and Montreal are some of the smallest cities to host. The Winter Olympics are a different story because they need a very specific type of terrain and they don't draw that large of crowds.

Sustainability Regulations after 2032 have all but ruled out Melbourne, Montreal, Rio, etc. as future prospective sites. The regulations specify year around use of Olympics venues by local participants of same sports, No more one-time, or seasonal venues. Hotels, Olympic Villages, Airports, roads, subways, etc. must also be used all-year by local population.
Eugene bid and Eugene won whether you like it or not. But where else would we hold World's in the USA?
L.A. - might be a good site but, I am betting that USC tears out the track after the 2028 Olympics to create more football seating like they did after the 1984 Olympics.
What other cities have a facility or can build one that can meet championship standards? Favorable weather?
Eugene didn't bid. They were given the World Championships without bidding for it. Nothing fishy there, I'm sure.
The LA Coliseum will only have a temporary track that needs to be taken down immediately following the Olympics in order to get ready for USC's first football game that fall. But of course they could put a temporary track back in and hold a World Championships there at some point.
No US city has a track stadium with 30,000 seats, which is the minimum required to hold a World Championship. (Eugene lied and said their new stadium would have 30,000 seats with no intention of doing so. Even with temporary seats Eugene will only have about 17,000 seats total.)
Maybe there is a football stadium in the United States (besides the LA Coliseum) that could squeeze in a track.
Seb botched the WCs and is ruining T&F. World Athletics is disrespected and marginalized. WC22 tickets are only $100 the same price as Six Flags Over Texas. In contrast T&F tickets at the Olympics in Paris 2024 are selling for $10,000 to $20,000 each per session. Seb should step down.

Back in the say Teachers Colleges were started to educate teachers who then civilized droves of newly arrived Western European savages and beasts. Junior Colleges were started to educate droves of veterans returning from World War II. Neither were intended to showcase elite sports. I hope we can rectify the inequities experienced in recent years. Hope this helps.

World Class tourist destinations such as London, Tokyo, Beijing, Paris, Hong Kong, Rome, Los Angeles, Seoul, Tehran, Johannesburg, etc. are what we need to save World Athletics T&F meets.
Unfortunately we don't have the leadership at World Athletics to accomplish the mission.
We do have great leadership at IOC in Lausanne and NBC in Burbank / Century City.
The extremely high valuation of the Olympics Brand proves it.
I think Seb Coe is the next Pete Rozelle who began at Compton High School, made the L.A. Rams the first world's first sports television property, then created the NFL media empire. Seb is smart enough to transition World Athletics into a Hollywood Streaming behemoth with Virtual Reality studios in Silicon Valley and headquarters in Beverly Hills. I can't wait for Seb to save Track and Field!

There will only be one other World Championship in the US in your lifetime, which will be sometime after 2028 in Los Angeles, because World Athletics likes to go back to the cities that hosted previous Olympics like they have recently done for 2013 Moscow, 2015 Beijing, 2017 London, and 2025 Tokyo.
Europe will get the majority of the World Championships because they can attract a much bigger crowd than any other area of the world.
