I didn't see the article until now but that's indeed an awful story. No one deserves that type of behavior aimed at them and no one deserves to be threatened on a run. It's certainly different for women running alone than men and there needs to be more accountability towards men misbehaving and harassing women. The perpetrators do it because they believe they can get away with it. Accountability is imperative to minimizing these incidents.

Sometimes it's ok to highlight what is going on to a specific group of people. That doesn't mean that you don't have feelings. You matter too. But this is about disproportionate treatment of women & what we can try to do as a community to help with safety related issues.

Women are less likely to be assaulted and less likely to be hospitalized when assaulted. What disproportionate treatment are you referring to?

Bizarre. The article doesn't condemn all men. It doesn't say that all men are violent. It asks men to go a little out of their way to not terrify women running alone at night. I always do that. Women alone are far more likely to be assaulted than men alone, but men get into fights with men more often by far. Men usually leave men alone at night but there are a lot more opportunities for conflict because they are almost the only ones out at night by themselves. The fact is that not a lot of women assault other people outside of partner violence, and in that case what they do is rarely as deadly as what men do, because men are a lot bigger and stronger on average.
Nothing physical but I had a not very nice encounter with someone today. I was walking alongside the road and someone went past in a van and leant out and screamed in my face for no reason.
In the years of running I did, I can't begin to try to count the number of negative encounters I had. Thankfully nothing ever escalated to physical but I had lit matches thrown at me. Most of the negative stuff was screaming, shouting and comments, pretty much all verbal but it still makes you feel unsafe. One of the worst was when I was 16/17 and in the summer, was on a really deserted lane and a truck driver slowed down and kept saying sexual stuff. I ran across a field of crops to get away from him. Another time I had two men in a car stopped at traffic lights literally scream in my face and I fell over on the ice.

You've pretty much got it. Things like "cross the street to make the woman feel safer" don't do anything of value, because of what they accomplish: make her "feel" safer. Don't be a dick, don't bump up against women, don't catcall, don't say stupid things. But it's no one's job to make anyone "feel" safe, especially since "feeling safe" won't save you from the attacker who doesn't care how you feel. Instead of insisting good men do extra to make women "feel" better, focus on stopping bad men from doing the things women are, quite sensibly, afraid of.

Men aged 15-40 are extremely violent compared to all other age cohorts, and women in general.
Why are men so violent?
