I mean... everything else aside, she did win two Olympic medals this year.
More like one. She got a bronze in the balance beam and a silver in the team competition in which she bailed on her teammates and put them in a nearly impossible situation. It was a miracle that they pulled off the silver.
What an insult to Sunisa Lee. Gold in the individual all-around, bronze in the uneven bars, and silver in the team competition, which she DID participate in.
How about Katie Ledecky? Two individual golds, one individual silver, and a relay silver in an American record.
TIME magazine is a joke and has been, for a very long time.

100% chance you call people snowflakes for getting triggered, and yet here you are, mad at a magazine you don't read.
Poor triggered tony :`(
I think if a US track athlete set the world 1500m record winning by 10 seconds at the Olympic trials, and then went on to win the trials in the 800m, 5000m and 10,000m you wouldn't care if they got a brain injury that caused them to quit mid-way through the Olympics - especially if they returned on the last day to get a bronze battling through their brain injury.
That is the track equivalent to what Simone Biles did this year.
You do realize that this year she was the national champion in 4 individual events. In the all-around, she won by more than 4 falls (she could have fallen 4 times and still won). She set the world record for the highest score on vault, breaking her own world record. She won one Olympic gold in the team and one bronze on the beam with a paralyzing injury (yes the twisties is an injury, just like vertigo, or any other brain injury).

I once ran a race (and set a PR) with a 3" gash on the bottom of my foot that I had cut open on a rock while swimming in a lake with a bunch of girls the night before, a 2" round blister on the top of the same foot from some flats I had borrowed for the race and on the way to the training room, I stepped on a bee and got stung on the same foot. I also know some guys that dropped out of the same race because they were mentally weak. According to TIME, the guys that dropped out would be the real heroes.
Was you ever stung by a dead bee?

A magazine's selection for athlete of the year will reflect the purpose of the publication. Time is a news magazine, so they're going to pick an athlete who was influential beyond the confines of their sport.

Read this. And if you don't understand, read it again. And again and again.
so it’s not really athlete of the year at all. news making sportsperson of the year might fit better.
if what you say is truly the criteria then the accolade is poorly named.
Sydney McLaughlin goes home DEVASTATED! Guess it would have been more heroic had she dropped the baton than had she actually set a world record and won the 4X4. See, she showed up, showed out and didn't let her team down, but evidently that isn't good enough for TIME.

No one thinks this award is for performances in competition. It's about the most newsworthy, most controversial and most influential athlete. Besides all of the Olympic stuff Biles also had a prominent role in the Nasser case.
Who won last year, the year before or any year?
Time is a magazine out to make money. How many people would be talking about it if a guy like Brady were at the top? This thread wouldn't exist and no one on LRC would give a **** about Time's rankings that's for sure. I can't say I understand this site's obsession with Simone but man, it's so cringy

Time Magazine is essentially just trolling. I didn't realize I could do that professionally. Should have aimed higher
Didn't they make Bruce Jenner Woman of the Year?
So all you need is
Be born with the most advantageous body composition for a gymnast
Have rich parents so you can have decades of personal gym time and coaching
Call it quits when things kind of aren't going your way
There's the athlete of the year recipe right there.

2020 Lebron James
2019 US Women's soccer team
That's all I can find. Sounds like they just started giving this "award" recently. Have done the Person of the Year since at least the 1930s, when they gave it to Adolf Hitler.
So the 'athlete of the year' in the eyes of Time is not the one who wins most or wins best but the one who stumbles at the highest hurdle because of "mental health" issues. What a strange alternate reality we have entered.
I'm honestly surprised they didn't go with me.
