and yes, I have taken charter flights before. It's really no different inside than flying commercial

If you are going to buy 50 plane tickets on a commercial jet, the cost difference may not be that different that renting all 50 seats on someone else's charter jet for a flight. That's completely different than a team or university owning it's own luxury private jet to fly around in, whenever they want. One is a matter of convenience, whereas the other is excessive.

someone needs to remind all you schleps in this thread that the NCAA pays for trips to nationals, not the individual schools

I dont care, I just disagree with the notion they are "flying private", which to me is akin to hopping on a true privately owned jet or luxury charter from netjets

I guess I posted in the wrong thread on my comment about HS XC travel. One of the all-time great NCAA XC races was the one where Pre ran down Rose at the end for the win. The race was in Washington so maybe Pre drove to the meet, but Rose certainly flew commercial from Kentucky. Had WK chartered a Leer instead, I can't say I would have really cared.

There might not have been a direct flight between the school and Indiana so the school chartered a plane for the team(s). Or they couldn't book that many tickets on short-notice after qualifying for regionals. For whatever school that was, I guarantee it was a cost-saving measure and not a perk like flying some luxury "private" jet.

No. it isn't cost saving. It makes sense for many schools in smaller cities flying to smaller cities. It provides better options for scheduling and reduces the stress of flying commercially. I estimate that teams pay 2 to 3 times what they would by flying commercial.

I know Oregon charted but for away track meets last year. They obviously didn’t have to do it that often because of meets at Hayward. Also some of these schools be in the most obscure locations that flying commercial takes way too long and there may not be any commercial airports nearby

Some guy whom went to CU told me he flew on a private jet to a major event. Guess it was legit.. anyone confirm/deny

We had a really crappy bus

The school has a private jet. I'm sure it was donated. I think the basketball team has first dibs, but the administrators will use it to go to conferences and if nobody else needs it, like the weekend before Thanksgiving, We can get it.

We also had a sweet bus that with both the girls and boys team you had plenty of space, with tables for studying. We took that a lot. Jet probably held 18 people. We flew commercial most times.

I'd love to see this as well. I thought this whole thread was one big joke, but apparently XC teams flying private is a real thing. I had no idea.

These threads make me realize how almost none of you competed at real schools yet you provide opinions on everything as if you know. Most P5 schools take private jets to many meets.

nc state flew their entire xc team and staffs in private plane.. and also their sports directors as what coach henes said on the interview and the posts they posted on IG

I know for a fact Iowa does not fly privately for XC. It is pretty common to charter flights to Big Tens, often picking up another team.

Not sure what distinction you are making between chartering and private. That is what we mean by private. Iowa chartered its own jet from Ultimate for B10 XC meet this year.

What if a university owns it own jets and they take them? What's that called?
