Where do wealthy folks buy clothes?

This. When I was young and poor I lived in NYC and spent a lot of time working around what I called "pilgrim money"; folks in New England who lived in 200 year-old houses on Cape Cod, when they weren't in Manhattan, or Paris, or...

They mostly drove 15 year-old Volvos and dressed in the same jeans and sweatshirt every day.

I have a couple of custom suits from a Savile Row house. My other suits and sportcoats are either from Brooks Brothers, Paul Stuart or J. Press -- usually bought on sale.

As for casual clothing, I wear clothes (often gifts) from Brooks Brothers, Vineyard Vines, Johnnie-O, Macy's or Nordstrom. However, I have been wearing chinos from Target for a couple of years -- they are less than $25.00.

I haven't worn jeans in over ten years.

Most “wealthy” (meaning top 1-2% or so) buy everyday clothes at normal mid-range clothing places: j crew, Patagonia, LL bean, etc…like the high end mall stores. I don’t know anyone who wears suits/fine clothing with any regularity.

Truly uber-wealthy famous people might do custom or super boutique/designer stuff, but your everyday guy who makes a couple hundred K looks like every other dad at the grocery store.

I'm lower middle class, if there is such a thing... but my running gear costs more than what I wear to the office...

Give an example (now that it's fall/winter):

Nike running beanie: $25

NB Dry long sleeve: $30

Unlined Asics Running Jacket (rain/snow/wind): $110

Runderwear briefs: $25

NB Fleece lines tights: $90

If it wasn't for the boots, I'd be cheaper.........

Maybe next time I go to a meeting in the office, I'll wear my tights and tshirt with my Redwings. lol

someone in retail/sales told me this once, and while i don't find it to be foolproof, it is much truer gauge than looking at someone's clothes to peg their wealth, look at their shoes. A wealthier person is more likely to be wearing high-end shoes,

I think the same goes for running shoes, to some extent, as well, except that you might need to exempt the younger really competitive runners who will buy the carbon sole shoes no matter what. But for the rest of us, I bet the better off financially runners tend to go for the more expensive running shoes as regular workout shoes more often than others,

But for everyday shoes, i bet this test holds up. Seriously. People see their feet as an investment, and they don't like to waste time changing shoes often. Good, no nonsense, high end and well made shoes for those that can.

But expensive "shoes" eh, I'll pass on that...

But i bet dollars to donuts that a wealthy person walking into their local hardware store saturday morning is more likely to be wearing some Merrels or your Redwings than some played out workshoe from Target of Kohls.

His/her jeans won't tell you anything, though.

By expensive shoes, i am not limiting that to dress shoes, btw. All manner of footwear.

To each his own, but I'll take a pair of Aldens that will last a decade and can be resoled over cheap shoes that will wear out in 6-12 months. Cheap shoes aren't even that cheap once you factor in how frequently you need to replace them (along with the fact that you can't really repair them).

I dunno what everyone else does, but I find some brands that I like and just stick with them, order online. I tried a personal shopper for a while, it was fine I guess, but she moved and I decided not to find a new one.

They have a shopper.. Nordstrom will pull things off the rack and and put together outfits to take home. The help picks up the clothes and things that are not worn head to second hand.

No way. Walk into a Walmart or Target and it’s only weird old guys with white tube socks and sandals or fat pre teens shopping for clothes. These wealthy cats that have real jobs have nice wardrobes. They don’t have time to roam the clearance racks at Marshall’s or TJ Maxx. So what gives? Ever seen a closet of a NBA player? No frugality there. I remember a story about Shaq dropping $50,000 at a Walmart once.

My wife and I get most of our clothes at Kohl’s on sale.

I was in London a few year's back, and stopped in Harrods. That place was intense, but you have to be either workth 8 figures to "regularly" shop there or bad with money.

This is really quite simple, as a couple others in this thread have alluded to. You also do not have to be wealthy to shop like the wealthy. Use a stylist or personal shopper. At the more affordable levels you can use stitch fix or similar services online and work with stylists to get the right clothes for your lifestyle. A step up from there might be working with a stylist or personal shopper stores like Nordstroms or Bloomingdales or Saks or Harrods or whatever other higher end department stores to pull a variety of items for certain occasions. This keeps you in good fitting clothes and either in the current fashion styles or something more timeless. If you want suits, get something custom tailored. You can go off the rack and get it tailored to fit, but stores like Indochino are going to build a custom suit at a similar price. Most of the big department stores above will also do a bit finer custom tailored suits, or if you have lots of money and little time you can get a tailor to come take measurements like you see on TV. Ask around to your rich friends, they'll have recommendations.
