What is so great about Pam Reed? That she can walk 300 miles with no sleep. Please! That she was fake-ass teeth because of here mineral deficiency due to not eating becasue she sees her self fat! Yeah, that is the type of people we want as role models, messed up mothers on meth or walking 300 miles while eating nothing but jolly ranchers. Have you ever seen her in person? She claims to be like 43 but looks 83. Nasty ugly woman.

well said...
I know that this is a stupid question to ask on letsrun, but why do these threads always have to devolve into personal attacks - I don't know who Pam Reed is or really care other than to say that 18 minutes a mile for 300 miles is not really running in my book.
I find the poster who defends her highly amusing - how is she a superior human being because she is a good ultrarunner? Who cares that she is a mother? OJ was a nice guy too....
She is not a good RD but can smoke anyone (well, most anyone) on this board in a hundred....or two hundred...call it walking if you will but she can walk faster than most the longest!

Isn't she director of the Tucson Marathon? Shouldn't you at least do the same for your town before you criticize her contribution.
I've heard she is paid 6 figures for that, and that's before the decimal. Unconfirmed tho.
In considering whether or not she's "good for running," which was the original point of this thread, consider whether or not anyone wishes to emulate her. No one does.

Agree about the personal attacks, but covering 300 miles on foot at any pace is impressive.

I don't get it...you say you don't like personal attacks and then compare Pam Reed to OJ?
It's funny how everyone portrays Pam Reed as this horrible woman. She seemed like a nice--if obsessed--women on that 60 minutes special.
I think most people here are angry because she got more publicity than they will ever get.
It's a little thing called JEALOUSY.
say what you want, but I think that most runners believe that ultra people just find longer and longer distances to run so that they can be competitive
Obviously you're a bit slow, so I'll try to help you out. I did not compare Pam Reed to OJ. I just don't accord any athlete "nice guy/gal" status because of their prowess, which I question in Pam's case. People thought OJ was a nice guy because he smiled and rushed for 2000 yards, etc, but that didn't mean much in the end.
Face it, ultrarunning isn't much of a sport - it might be more interesting if there was some depth, but to say people are jealous of her is funny.
Unless you're Pam lurking - why are you so defensive against any slight real or imagined?

So what? When people talk about Ritz "moving up" to the ____k or another person having their future in the marathon it is the same thing. People change event to one where there is less perceived competition all the time. Go beat them if you can, noone is stopping you.
Too many people here are all upset that Pam somehow takes away attention that their version of "real" runners should get. They have this idea that if she were not on 60 Minutes there would be this in depth story on Webb, Billy Mills or even PRE. Sorry, she has not taken any attention away from these people. If she were not on there would be a story about some family that had octuplets thru fertility meds and how the kids are cute.
I would like to see more running coverage too, but ripping those that get the attention is not the answer and makes you look petty and small.
If you don't like ultra, don't run one. If you think you are better than her, go beat her.
What I really suspect is that in your hearts you know she is tougher than you and this makes you mad.

First, Pam Reed is tougher than me. Doesn't bother me in the least. I never have ripped her - so you must be directing that comment at someone else.
I don't care if she was on 60 minutes - more power to her. I didn't watch the program. I don't expect to see running stories in the mainstream news, so I'm not disappointed by her coverage.
Your analogy is way off with Ritz - he still can run a sub 28 10k before moving up to the 'thon. 18 minute per mile pace is not even a brisk walk. Personaly for me, when the "race" pace is slower than walking I lose interest, but if it floats your boat then great- go on over to LetsStumble.com and tell everyone about it!

Out.
Try to keep up with Matt Carpenter by "speed-hiking"...

If I'm slow, you're slower still;

Superimposing Pam Reed's motherhood with a not-so-subtle insinuation that her apparently benevolent exterior resembles O.J. Simpson's seeming nice-guyness is, let's ask the judges, yes...a COMPARISON.
Face it, ultrarunning isn't much of a sport - it might be more interesting if there was some depth, but to say people are jealous of her is funny.
Until you can run 100 miles, I would not say another thing about ultrarunning being a "sport." It's an atletic endeavor, plain and simple.
As for jealousy...are you kidding? That's the modus operandi of 80% of posters. Seeing Pam Reed get attention when so many posters here run 140 miles per week barefoot at 6:00 minute pace just irritates people to no end.
No use pretending it doesn't.
Unless you're Pam lurking - why are you so defensive against any slight real or imagined?
Obviously I'm not Pam Reed. What I don't understand is, when opening up this thread, why I see such vehement--and, on occasion, HATEFUL--attacks against a random lady who got a bit of press?
I agree; what do you all have against a lady who is trying to push the limits of ultimate endurance? Do you feel...god forbid...threatened by her walking? I applaud anyone who pushes the envelope. Why climb Everest when there are plenty of other mountains that one could climb faster and faster...
Why did Chuck Yager and the other pilots of the 1950's who had the "right stuff" see how high and far they could pilot their rocket planes into the upper stratosphere? Pam Reed is obviously trying to set a record for the farthest consecutive distance traveled on foot; it a certain sense, it may be a novel endeavor, but to see the vehemence and vituperative reactionism with which you all behave is just absurd. Honestly, get a dose of perspective.
i am not sure where the 18 minute time came from.
she has the womens' record at badwater with a time of 27h 57m. the race is 135 miles. at that distance/time she had a pace of 12:25.
that is the same pace as a 5h 25m marathon.
say what you want, but 12 min miles for 135 miles thru death valley, in july, is pretty impressive.

yeah, my bad for repeating 18 min pace. 12:25 pace is amazing for that distance, but I still don't find ultrarunning compelling or interesting so I'll sign out here. I'm sorry if I upset or offended anyone - but that's just my opinion. I think some of you guys/gals in the Pam Reed fan club are a little oversensitive and could do with a chill pill......

i respect that. for me, i do not know what i think about ultras. if someone likes them, good for them. they do seem to have a bit of a freakshow about them, but then again the same could be said for the marathon. earlier this month after i finished my marathon i was watching the 4 1/2 hour plus people come in and some of them looked like they were on a death march. for those people a marathon was an ultra.
i do confess i have given some thought to running an ultra, a 50k, but it would be mostly just to say i did one. which come to think of it was why i ran my 1st marathon.
for the most part i am a live and let live kinda guy, and if you like ultras - great, if not, great as well.
I'm glad ultra runners are out there doing it but most of them never competed collegiately and took up ultras after marathoning. One ultra guy I know who logs a whopping 50MPW told me that I don't know real running or pain because I never ran a "thon".
I informed him that I train faster than he runs his 5K's and invited him on a 15 miler with me sometime after he can make it through one of my 90 mile weeks and interval work outs.
He still thinks a 2:35 marathon is more significant than a 29:30 10K and usually is hurt for at least 3 months after one of his 3:05-3:20 marathons.

This mirrors my experience with the ultrarunners that I have met in my community. Personally, I could not care less how people occupy their free time as long as they are not breaking laws or doing destruction to the community ... and training or racing ultras is pretty harmless in the grand scheme of things.
I do take exception when I hear ultrarunners bragging about their accomplishments, like taking 3rd place in a 100 mile race that has only 50 competitors, when they can only manage to run a 3:20 marathon. The thing that a lot of ultrarunners fail to realize is that just because a race is longer does not mean the challenge is greater.
