I HATE the WA rules book so these are from the USATF book. The rules are the same just worded differently. RULE 163.5 Each competitor must keep in the lanes outside the line or curb marking the inside of the track, including the curved part of the diversion from the track for the steeplechase water jump. In races run entirely in lanes, each competitor must keep in the allotted lane from start to finish. In races run partially in lanes, each competitor must keep in the allotted lane from the start to the marked cut-in points. Unless a material advantage has been gained or the athlete is in violation of Rule 163.4, a competitor shall not be disqualified if he or she: (a) Is pushed or forced by another competitor to step out of the lane, or (b) Steps out of the lane on the straightaway, or (c) Steps or runs outside of the outer lane line on the curve, or on any straight part of the diversion from the track for the steeplechase water jump.

Based on the wording of the rules, I can only assume either (1) the umpire did not see the infraction and did not write up an official report to give to the referee or (2) the referee decided that there was some sort of contact that caused her to step inside the rail. Watching the the video, I do not see any contact; it looks like she just stumbled as she came off the barrier. It looks like a clear DQ to me. Sometimes things just get missed in a track meet just as penalties are sometimes missed in a football game. And just like football, they cannot go to the video to determine if an infraction occurred; it must be reported by the umpire first. If a football official misses an interference call, they cannot check the replay video, see the penalty, and enforce it. If the flag was not thrown, it never happened (even if it did).

(1) Purrier did not step inside the rail; she was pushed inside the rail. See rule 163.5a above. (2) She stepped out on a straighway. See rule 163.5b above. No DQ for her.

I have not seen the video of Niyonsaba. I watched the replay but did not see her step inside. Does anyone have a video link that shows the infraction?

Did anyone else notice on the Session 3 NBC broadcast that they removed 15 seconds of the broadcasters speculating on the DQ when they first heard about it (when the final results graphics showed the DQ). When I was watching live, one of the announcers had a slip of the tongue and said "I wonder if he..." and quickly corrected himself.

They cut out at 58:46 of the feed with 15 seconds of "Coverage to Resume Shortly":

They ruled she took 3 steps on the rail and they only noticed because she infringed another competitor when her right hand went up. End of thread.

The athletes I feel bad for are the biological females who just happened to be born at the same time and had to have their Olympic dreams compromised from the start by facing competition that is allowed to have the same substance coursing through their veins that gets male or female legit athletes banned.

Robert - I disagree with some of your takes, but I 100% agree with this one. This is an absolute sham, and reeks of a governing body doing whatever they want with impunity. Not trying to be dramatic, but this is almost criminal - this is the type of thing that can affect the trajectory and earning potential of an athlete.

this is not an issue of gender, rather it is an issue of testosterone. The athlete in question has a higher rate of testosterone than the legal limit.

To begin, I do have an issue with the testosterone level rule (elevated testosterone levels significantly above what is normal for a woman gives a woman an unfair advantage in ANY sport and ANY running distance. That being said, I watched the video five times. Then I recorded my screen and watched it frame by frame. At NO TIME did Niyonsaba step indie the curbing not even on top of it. DQing her is a TRAVESTY. I rate it equal to reinstating Niels Amos in the 800m but not Isaiah Jewett. After watching close up, and in slow motion, you can see that Amos got too close to Jewett and Jewett’s foot made contact with Amos which caused Jewett’s foot to move sideways and causing that leg to trip on his other leg. Reinstating Amos is totally wrong and NOT reinstating Jewett is RIDICULOUS!! I’ve been watching the Summer Olympics since 1960 in Rome when I was 10 years old. The Track & Field officials for these Olympics are, without a doubt, the most incompetent officials I have ever seen at an Olympic Games!!
