Being able to run under 18 for three miles proved to be a great ego boost for me. I'm not a great runner, but on PFT day I felt like one. Unlike most places in life, the military is one place where people appreciate and understand what it means to run. One of the things that cracked me up were the people who thought they would "gut out" a fast 3 mile PFT. In other words, if they went out and just ignored the pain, they would have a good time. Usually, they went sprinting for the first 100 meters and struggled the rest of the way. Always good for a laugh. That being said, there was one guy who did the "gut out" routine a couple of times and decided to try regular training for a change. He probably only ran 3 or 4 times a week, but he was one of those nut jobs who ran as hard as he could every time he hit the pavement. Anyway, on an accurate 5k course, he eventually went well under 15. Training helped a lot, but that guy had guts for sure. With some direction, I always wondered what he could have done.
