In al the road races I do, there are a lot of mile races for kids. But I did do a mile race last month at a local college, that was uphill mile the whole way. I think the record for the race was 6:20 something, and I won it in 6:32. The week after I ran a 15:48 5k road race, so it wasn't like I was in bad shape. And it was probably the hardest race I have ever done.
But on the topic, I would love to run more mile races, their fun and it's always nice to see what kind of mile shape you are in, after running tons of miles and little speedwork.
The Cherry Festival in Traverse City, Michigan use to have an elite mile (along w/ a HS mile) right before their parade and right after their 15k/5k races. The articles says it was canceled (this year, after about 20 years) because of safety issues. It was always a fun race to watch and at times had some great races and times.
I have ran in and specated many road races. In 1997 As a member of the HPU Cross Country team, I worked the Honolulu Mile that preceded the Honolulu Marathon. That was more work then I ever imagined. It was not nice at all to be the one working instead of the one competing. The mile was open to all ages and it took all morning to run all the events. The best part was watching the children run (close second was getting to see Regina Jacobs.) The professional mile featured many world class runners as well as Seneca Lassiter who as the rave of the nation as a high school miler. The event was on the main street in Waikiki which was parallel to the Oceanfront. The setting was ideal but the effort that went into that day was amazing. Between the police, the parents of the children, the spectators, the venders, the tourists that just wanted to get to the beach and the athletes themselves; I can see where it would be a headache to organize.
