I can’t really disagree with you. There should be a line in the sand, and, perhaps that line should be eligibility expires at age 25. You are also right that there’s a huge difference in maturity between a 24 year old and a 19 year old. However, that same difference applies to a 23-year old versus a 19-year old. 23 versus 24 is a distinction without a difference, really. As I said, I redshirted one year, and then I developed a physical malady during my senior (5th) year, where I could’ve easily applied for a medical exemption to get another season going into my age 23/24 year.

The thing with Mantz is, he was that 20-year old running his first 80 mile week you referred to. He was exactly that. Sure, he was elite in high school, and, sure, some Mormons are able to still run during their missions, but Mantz took an entire year to get back to his high school self. He chronicled his training. So, that was his first year.

Do we even know if he’s going to run this fall after the Trials? What does he have to prove? He crushed the field at the NCAA xc championship and finished second in the fastest NCAA 10,000 in history in a race he would’ve won had he hugged the rail. What’s left to prove? Kid is a frickin amazing runner, no matter the “extra” year he was granted.

I'd be more thinking the guy needs to move to the roads ASAP. Running indoor 5Ks/3Ks and outdoor 5Ks is pretty much a waste for him. In his physical prime, he should be doing the HM/Marathon.

Pat is actually from the north of England, raced against him growing up. The British middle talent at the moment is unreal.

wrong. It has been very evident at both days so far that guarding the rail is not instinctive and it should be. Guarding the inside lane needs to be taught just as much as being in a good position to cover a move, ready to strike, when to cut in and the like.

Moving with 450m to go and having a bevy of talent go with you is tantamount to how can I squeeze every tenth out of this race to the wire.

He didn't get any more eligibility than anyone else and took a break in training along the way. Your wining is what is old!

How much lifting do top programs do? Dever, Mantz, Nur, Masai, Wildschutt, they all look like sleletons. There is no way that these guys ever touch a weight.

BS- they are all lifting at least 2x per week, newsflash the girls are all lifting too, same in hs for anyone that gets to D1

Is moving up to the marathon that lucrative? He will never win races against Kenyans. If I was him, I would rather stay on the track.

Lifting plus 100mi weeks don't exactly turn you into McMullen:

"Division I five-year clock: If you play at a Division I school, you have five-calendar years in which to play four seasons of competition. Your five-year clock starts when you enroll as a full-time student at any college."

You ARE able to compete at any age as long as you meet the NCAA guideline above (look it up). So what if they don't start school for a few years.

College is not high school anymore, grow up! You are simply people haters and really are despicable trying to troll others. Also, I am not a BYU fan, but admire good athletes, plain and simple.

Funny as I've talked to MANY elite college athletes--they don't ever read the blogs posted and could care less about them many are just "put-down" trying to tear people apart.

Also, Mantz was probably disappointed, but not "devastated" as the title of this post goes. He seems like a class act. After the race I watched him congratulate Dever, then later help NAU's Nur to and from the podium.

Mantz should be ashamed to stick around byu for seven years (4 years + covid + redshirt + medical redshirt) so he can beat up on kids. At least his mother is lucky that he chose to set up for life at byu instead of in her basement.

The old school way of doing 80 BILLION miles a week? OVER. Now everybody's going into these lower volume, higher intensity workouts. And look what happens to these fields -- they continue to get faster and FASTER.

Don’t say all unless you know for sure. I know one/some haven't touched a weight in a year.
