Getting into that zone when you’re young many kick from 100 out, over time it grows to 200, 300, 400, 500, 600 as you understand how to grit it out

Wow, one guy who is not mentioned, ever, is Patrick Dever. That was impressive from him.
Those were clearly the class of this race--Grijalva, Hocker, Dever.
Half way through the race I said this is nuts. You have two great kickers. The rest are basically saying only three of us will get through. I specifically mention Nico and the CU kid. They were asking to be eliminated

Oregon are mid D focused though. Only person I could see beating Nico at cross would be Teare, so Nico would’ve been too 5 regardless.

I worded that poorly. I have no doubt Nico will be able to close better as time goes on. I mainly wrote this thread from the point of view that I think Young will be running at the highest level. I don’t think he has the ability to crank off 51, 52 last laps in a 5k. I would love to be proven wrong, but I just don’t see his future in the 5k. I see it in the 10k, and eventually the marathon.
I think a lot of the altitude guys struggled in the humidity. NAU, BYU and Colorado each only got one guy through in the long distance races.

What's yr take on Notre Dame? They also have only 1 runner (Dylan Jacobs) who made the 5k team. Disappointing results considering the success in XC.

There's not that much difference between the two races and if someone is good at one, they'll be good at the other. Just about any strength runner will slow down by about 11 seconds per mile from 5K to 10K. Salazar had minimal top-end speed, but still managed a 13:11.
Yea but when you look at that race you see Salazar getting out kicked by two runners as well so I understand the meaning behind him having “no kick”

What I'm saying is that Nico is likely to equally good at both distances. I believe he just had a really bad race today. Was the race run in hot and humid conditions?
Looked like he just had a really bad day. Was in good position with 2 laps to go. Just looked super tired. Maybe the humidity got to him. It isn’t like he was topped out at max speed when he got dropped.

It had to have been a bad day for him. Any 13:24 guy should be capable of 54 seconds or faster off of 14:00 pace.

His 13:24 was in cool conditions and was not tactical. How much experience does he have in a tactical championship style 5K in those conditions. XC is completely different than a tactical 5K on the track. And most of those guys have much faster 1500 prs.
A lot of guys struggled today, like most of the Stanford guys. And even Teare did not look great. He does need to develop speed but these kinds of races are the learning experiences he need to become a better track runner.
