CBA is FINISHED!

I am confused. I think it was you who claimed that is was a troll attempt to state that CBA is very good but not as good as hundreds of teams in the country. You posted some faulty stats to try to prove a point. But when you realized how wrong you were, you resort to insults instead of sticking to the discussion and the topic and the facts. But I am used to that on Letsrun. The majority of people post opinions that are commonly refuted and then they get angry instead of continuing with a healthy discussion.

Good to see someone on this thread with common sense. Al keeps trying to use times from seniors who will not be running XC for CBA next year. A few facts that can't be disputed here:

1. CBA runs in fast, paced night of 3200 meets every year

2. CBA usually has 7+ RETURNERS under 9:30 at these meets, and usually 2-3 under 9:15

3. This year CBA ran at a fast, paced night of 3200s meet

4. This year, CBA's XC RETURNERS ran much slower than trend, with none breaking 9:30 and most hovering around the 10:00 range

5. 3200 times can be a good predictor of an XC team's depth

It may have been a hot take to say CBA is finished. Yes, there are still months before XC starts. They could get better. Right now though, for a CBA team, they aren't very good.

Also, private schools are unfair as they can get people from anywhere to run for them. Big disadvantage for the local, small town public schools that struggle to assemble a roster. That's a debate for another thread and another day though...

This is probably the most sensible post I’ve seen on this thread so far. CBA always runs twilight 3200s every year (although usually they are two or three weeks later from this point in the season). Clearly their showing at Cherokee was not good by their standards, particularly for the returners. Quite honestly though it seems like CBA’s times have slipped since both Heath and Bennett left as I remember when they had I believe 6 or 7 guys sub 9:20 on the same team , I believe in 2013? The times from this weekend are not up to snuff obviously but you can’t say CBA is finished until the XC results show it because that is their focus. BTW what I’ve always thought is wild is that CBA for all of their history and success has only had one guy sub 9.

Well, CBA has only one sub 9 runner is because they rely on depth and a tight pack. Believe me, come November they will be tough to beat.

They usually run two Night of 3200s with a huge improvement between the two. In NJ, meets usually start the 1st week of April, they then run the Cherokee Night of 3200s and then the Holmdel Night of 3200s the 1st week of May. This year, the Cherokee meet was their first outdoor meet after a 2-3 meet winter. You all are comparing their Night of 3200 times from the May race where they usually had been racing for 5 weeks, by then. They are not race fit, yet. I don't think they are a great team this year but they will be much better later in the season. Look at their times after the Monmouth County meet, the 2nd week of May, to get a better feel of where they will be in comparison to previous years.

They have never had 6 or 7 guys under 9:20 in one year. Four is the most they have had in one year with a bunch of 9:20s behind them.

The fast heat of Cherokee night of 3200s went out in 75 seconds. They went through the mile in 4:45. Desousa closed in 2:04 and sub 60 to run 914. Does this race constitute a fast paced 3200? Times from this meet are irrelevant because of how slow it went out. Not to mention it’s the first week of the season.

He's a senior and not a returner, you people seem to think there are fifth years in high school. His times this season are meaningless to my argument.

A slow start to a race doesn't make the race "irrelevant". The goal of these night of 3200 races is to gather up a bunch of fast runners to make the race fast. The race didn't go out fast, but it closed fast which still makes it a fast race. Some people run better off a slower start as it allows them to kick harder at the end. Seems like that was the case here. He might've gotten dropped or ran a positive split if the race went out in 4:30. People like you are the type who start making excuses after races. "If the race went out faster I could've done [insert bold prediction here]". If the times from this race were so irrelevant the runners should've looked at the clock after they saw 75 the first lap and should've all dropped out since there would be no point finishing.

It is also very telling that many of CBA's XC returners weren't even fast enough to make the seeded heat (that was supposedly "irrelevant"). Says a lot about how weak CBA will be next year compared to trend.

What is really "laughable" is that anyone cares - running fan or not.

If you guys want to evaluate a team’s chances of going to NXN, CBA in particular, you must look at their past history of reloading.

In 2019, 5 of CBA’s top 7 raced in the NXR Championship race for the first time ever, and they still qualified.

Plus, the Northeast is not as strong as regions like Southwest and California, so they will benefit from that.

Well we have to see if NXN even happens this year

My senior year....we're talking 25 years ago....I ran exactly two 3200m under 9:40....a 9:38 and 9:32 in my last two races. The others? Just under 10 to 9:45.

End of the year and not one returner under 9:30. Most are not even close to 9:30. I’d stay away from sports betting if I were you. This CBA team is the weakest they’ve had in years.

It’s funny if they were running fast you’d be saying they’ll all burn out in college and will get hurt but when they’re not running as fast they’re washed up and done for. Fact is this was a covid year, racing wasn’t the same and training hasn’t been the same. Program has turned 5 flat nobody freshman to national teams for years, so unless you have any insider info or coach experience like them, I’ll see you in December.

Let’s just keep blaming covid for everything...losers mentality. You’ve failed to notice that nearly the entirety of the track world is running absurdly fast right now. High school, college, and pro times have been all been incredibly fast this year. CBA private school kids should be able to afford the fancy Nike spikes. Their times are still lackluster even with the improved spike technology.

I thought this was about the NFL. Guessing this CBA isn't the collective bargaining agreement.

Union Catholic might plausibly beat them next year in non-public A and/or MOCs.

They lack depth, but they have 2 excellent juniors (one 3rd at MOC 1600 in 4:09.x, the other 3rd at 800 in 1:52.5, who ran 4:12 at groups), plus a frosh who's run 4:26/9:43 and a soph at 2:03/4:39/10:05.

Last fall they beat perennial champ Westfield for the Union County meet, with just 2 seniors in their top 7 (and the fast track frosh running JV at the time). It's not impossible that UC could put 3 in front of CBA's top runner next fall.

FWIW, UC ran 7:53 for 2nd in the track MOC 4x8, with at most 1 senior on the team (not sure who the full lineup was). CBA didn't make the seeded heat, finishing 17th overall in 8:16. Obviously CBA will be stronger in XC than this year's 4x8, but that aligns with less depth in years past.

Funnily enough, that 4:09 guy from Union Catholic has the same last name as the Newbury Park head coach.
