Jack Daniels 4th edition - anyone read?

I have never understood why there needs to be a distinction between intervals and repetitions. Most see these terms as interchangeable, as the distinction is so technical.

Have you read the book at all? Daniels defines interval training as essentially VO2 max training. R training is about running economy. I training involves reps of 2-5 minutes at 3k-5k pace. R training involves reps of 400m or less at mile pace or faster. How is any of that confusing?

There’s lots of differences to differentiate intervals and repetitions

Intervals should hurt

Repetitions should not

Intervals have a 1:1 or less recovery

Repetitions have a longer 1:3 recovery

Intervals are a broken down race

Repetitions are glorified strides

Intervals are done after a base phase

Repetitions can be done year round

There are 3 versions of a 6 week triathlon plan. I’m not a triathlete and would be really surprised if this would adequately prep someone, but maybe I have no idea what I’m talking about.

The book just got here and I’m disappointed with the Ultra section. Like the triathlon section it’s more of a “discussion”. I have the first and 3rd versions and the preface doesn’t clearly call out the changes. I’m going to reread it all as a refresher since it’s been a few years. I have no races coming up so will likely compliment the re-read with the blue fitness plan and A/B it with the 3rd edition to look for updates.

I have the 3rd edition. it's a great book but I have found it frustrating that his marathon plans cover such a narrow range - there's novice and then some really quite tough programmes. Nothing really fitted for an older non novice like me. I saw somewhere that the 4th edition has plugged some of these gaps. Does anyone know if that's true?

I may trend towards novice but how does the 2Q plan at a moderate but not extreme mileage level not fit what you describe?

That's a very good point. I think the 2Q program with some of the Q sessions dropped would take me a good way towards what I want and Daniels helpfully highlights some that can be dropped. Trouble is that still leaves me sometimes with 27 miles of quality running (1 of threshold and 1 long run at marathon race pace) in some weeks which is beyond my creaking bones! I read somewhere that one of his 4th edition adaptations is for older runners and if that extends to his marathon programs I'd definitely go for the 4th edition. If not I'll have to do my own adaption and as you say the 2Q program is probably the best place to start.

Can anyone with access to the 4th edition confirm whether he has an older runner marathon program?

There is a glossary in the back now. That's new, a handy reference.

No ultra plans either and no plan tweaks for masters runners as suggested. Save your money.

There are no ultra plans in the book, but there is definitely a very basic triathlon plan.

Pfitzinger's Advanced Marathoning is good for not just the Marathon, but you can use it for 5k up to Marathon.

I can attest to this. I have Pfitzinger's Advanced Marathoning book and his Faster Road Racing: 5K to Marathon book and they're both very good. The explanatory chapters are brief but informative and the plans feature weekly mileage anywhere from 40 to over 100 miles per week.

I'd say they have something for everyone intermediate to advanced. Beginners are probably best served starting elswehere.
