I have a newspaper article from 1984 that describes IU grad student, Danny Henderson, setting a new IU XC course record of 28:16 in a race that included Jim Spivey.

Furman was not a particularly difficult course, easier than Iowa State in '00. Probably about as difficult as Louisville.
Did Iowa State run the back hill section in the 2000 meet?

Sorry, but I remembered this in error. The newspaper article referenced a South Bend 10K course record, not the IU XC course!
OSU is a true xc course. 45 sec slower than IN course.

Yes.

So we should expect a winning time around 30:50?
The old IU course had a few short but steep hills. You could use the momentum from the downhills to work the uphills pretty well. Most other portions of the course were flatter or slightly rolling. It ran a bit faster than one might expect.
Personally I find the Indiana State course to be slower than the old IU course. The gradual uphills on the 2nd half of each loop slow your momentum on that course. Because the uphills are so gradual, you really can't use your momentum from any downhills.
The elevation profile of the OSU course doesn't look particularly challenging until mile 4.75 or so. Runners will still have plenty of energy for the first round on the forested rolling hills. The portion that circles around back to the start from 3.0 to 4.75 appears to have some barely perceptible rises and falls. However after 4.75 miles, the 2nd round on the forested rolling hills and the climb to the finish could be brutal. That last mile and a half is going to take some names.

Kiptoo ran a 23:34 this fall for the 8k on the course

The extra loop for the 10k has the biggest hill on the course though. The 6k and the 10k are harder than the 8k - which is probably why the 8k times on it aren't terrible
I ran the IU course in '74. Very tough.
Throw in the bad weather to boot and it was a bear.
True test of cross country.
Some questions/thoughts:
Why is Rim Rock not used anymore? KU doesn't want to host?
What other venues would be a better/true XC course similar to Okie St, that could still host NCAAs?
I remember the Missouri course being pretty challenging. 2002 Big XII was held there. I think it was the campus golf course. Maybe different now.
I dislike XC on a flat/fast course. It doesn't need to be ridiculous, but the Okie St and Terre Haute courses are good.
Dannehl National Cross Country Course, UW-Parkside
Danny Henderson.. nice guy.
He came down to Bedford once on a cold morning to a local road race, won easily and talked to every runner around afterwards.

Rim Rock is a great XC course. But parking and accessing the course are a real pain in the butt.
Missouri just got their own new course in 2019 (Gans Creek XC Course). It is a very nice course with a 2k inner loop and a 3k outer loop. It is not very challenging though. I believe they will be hosting nationals in 2024?? I think they host SEC soon too.
