Jorgensen haters go home devastated

Does anyone have the interview or video where she claimed she would win Marathon Gold? I have t seen it and have been trusting this story but have ever actually seen her say this.

I dont consider what she said to be a big deal. Many, many athletes in multiple sports have stated unrealistic goals.

Yes, how terrible of her to have lofty goals. I’m sure she would have still won gold in the triathlon if she had not set her sights so high.

That doesn’t exist because that’s a misrepresentation of what was said. She most definitely did not “claim that she would win marathon gold”.

She did declare a goal of winning Olympic gold in the marathon. The tweet has since been deleted.

She ran the 5k standard and will be racing in the Trials barring injury. Good going Gwen.

The truth will out presuming she can race her way into the final. She's either got the goods or she's just another runner filling out the field.

Then all this debate will be over.

Having a goal of doing something is not the same as claiming that you will do something.

Bigger runs up front for Sisson, Buchalski, and Kilati.

Buchalski has been crushing in a lot of TAS videos. Seems to have decent speed too. Was able to close in 68. Didn't fall back as much as it seemed when Sisson made her initial move.

Agreed. I was impressed with Buchalski as having the big break-out performance of the women's race. Nothing against Gwen J, and she definitely did well to come back with a PR, but it seems strange that she gets so much attention for a modest PR, while Buchalski's huge race in a legit time doesn't seem to generate much interest.

Let's say that you are a 13:40 guy in college and a returning national qualifier. The national champ in the decathlon who is on your team, declares at the start of the year that he is switching to distance running because he has proven that he is superior to everyone in the decathlon. He states his goal as 13:10 and a national championship.

Here's an SI article from that time when she announced she was switching sports. It really covers everything, even the reaction on Let's Run. And setting the goal for accountability and having no plan B (very end of interview). At the beginning of the interview Gwen already says her initial expectations were a bit off, as she thought she could go into marathon training, while Jerry wanted her to do a 10k.

I remember Mo running half of the London marathon for practice for running the whole thing the next year. General TV interviewers were kind of bemused, like a great runner like him can't just run the whole thing on first try? Presumably cause hobby joggers do it on their first try. It takes a while to even move up in distance, never mind a whole new sport.

I wish she’d do another interview now. She said on YouTube that the marathon is always the goal, but she wouldn’t be able to qualify for that until she’s 38 (next Olympic cycle). That seems near impossible with the condition of her body and age. So... will she just stay at the 5k/10k distance? In any event, I think she got a rude awakening at how hard it is to make it to the top in running and how much continual young talent comes in every year and sets the bar higher and higher.

Based on the results of Kiera D'Amato (and to a lesser extent, Sara Hall) I think Gwen Jorgensen has the potential to run a 2:23:00 marathon (give or take) within a year, with proper training.

I disagree. It does not appear she responds to the high mileage needed for the marathon or even the 10K. The 5K clearly seems like her wheelhouse at the moment. I think she needs to focus on the 5K and find some kind of closing speed to give herself a chance at the Olympic team, assuming that is her goal. She’s doing very well at the 5K but has the misfortune that the US has their best all-time depth at the event at the moment.

After starting out well in the 10000m, then regressing, she went back to the basics to improve her speed at shorter distance. She has accomplished that. But I don't see her competing well on the world stage in the 5k.

I figure from her proven hours of triathlon aerobic training, she can put in the work for the marathon. However, it is more impactful than the bike or swimming, so it will be a fine line to avoid injury.

Granted, I stated this without knowing whether she has the running mechanics to withstand high volume of run training. Some of it can be done on soft surface. Some of it in a water-treadmill. Some of it in an Alter-G. But a lot of it has to be done on hard surface to condition for the pounding. The Super-Shoes can help in that regard. But dunno, high volume in them might cause their own problems?
