Bear in mind the semis were ran the evening before the final (and the heats the day before the semis). Absurd as it might sound, he was likely conserving a bit of energy for the 400m the next day too.
He ran 95% of the race in front with no drafting. The only time he lost the lead, was when the Indian guy briefly passed him and blocked his stride a bit. The only major championships with the first 300m run in lanes, so it was hard enough for experienced 800m athletes like Ovett to judge the pace correctly, let alone a guy almost completely new to the event.
Surely good for low 1:42 in that form in a WR attempt with somebody like Konchellah to pace him ala Coe in 81.
He is still something like the 10th fastest non-African born athlete for the 800m, compared to 40th or so for the 400m.
Likely a 43/1:41 athlete today. Sadly, the likelihood is he doped given a Polish coach and part of the Soviet bloc, but still mightily impressive.
