If Hocker's 2:49 is equivalent to 3:36/1500 and 3:53/M then it's not that surprising seeing as Teare just ran 3:54 in the same race.

Well how about Jason Gomez, the sophomore from Iowa State who beat Hocker? He ran 1:47.02 a week ago, which as far as I can tell was his first time under 1:50. He’s only got a 4:19 mile PR.
I feel like it’s hard to tell if they have these new victories or an older model. Especially cooper.
Either way it’s not like any of them ran way faster today than they have in normal spikes. Coopers PR for the mile is like 3:55 which is basically what he ran today.
At the end of the day this was just a really talented and well coach Dmr team
Also I know everyone on here believes these these spikes are a huge improvement. But while I’m sure they’re nice I’m skeptical that they are as big of an improvement as the vaperflys were.
Most of the improvement of the vaporflys was due to the high stack super foam. The super foam is used in these new spikes but the stack high is so so much smaller. And we know having a higher stack is a big part of this all (hence why that’s what world athletic regulates). Also the use of a carbon fiber/plastic plate is nothing new in spikes.
Agree w/poster above re: WR due more to a great coach and a returning veteran star-studded lineup that set the CR last year.
Teare's anchor split was less than a second faster than his split on last year's 9:24 team, so the Air Zoom shoes had little effect on his performance. He's just become a great college miler.
Also note that nothing spectacular was run in the distance races at the Karlsruhe meet today -- and those were pros who some/all should have had access to supershoe spikes.
I do agree with the two points Rojo stated above re: Covid Effect and believe a 3rd can be added: many college distance runners around the country have been living together at altitude for much of the fall and into the winter while taking online classes. Thus, you stay at home online & study, go out for training, come back and eat, then go to bed. Rinse & repeat.
Essentially, a lot of these runners were living the life of a semi-professional living at altitude w/school work replacing a part-time job. And, no stress of having to prepare for a race every other weekend. This environment appears to be much more conducive to optimal training than having to race around campus all day, squeeze in a team workout, then go back to the dorm and study until midnight or later.
In any case, this DMR record is just a continuation of fantastic performance we have seen since, I would say, last May when Leo Daschbach broke 4 in the Quarantine Classico Mile. Huge prs and all sorts of world & national records have been set at every level since then.

That being said, the first thing I thought when I heard about this time was as follows. This has to be one of two things.
1) The Covid-19 effect. In my mind, the Covid-19 impact is two-fold.
i) People are very focused after missing almost a full year of competition.
ii) Plus with Covid-19, they aren't partying and getting hung over at bars
2) Super spikes. Can anyone tell me what spikes these guys are wearing?
I'd bet a lot of money the biggest impact is #2, more so than #1 or coaching.
If anyone has the new spikes at the NCAA level, it has to be Oregon.
Remember, Nick Willis recently said his new New Balance spikes helped him run 2 full seconds faster than he was expecing in a recent 1200 time trial. So if they are worth 1 second every 600 (and if anything I"d assume Nike's shoes are better), then they would be worth 6.666 seconds in a 4000.

Anyways, I agree with the poster below until someone tells me they weren't wearing super spikes.

This is all nuts to me because Hocker was on it, and I would have expected that 1200m leg to be Reed Brown. Wow. Unreal. Excellent coaching and racing.
To point out again, Hocker was several steps behind Iowa State. Iowa State's 3 fastest guys only have outdoor eligibility remaining. They have a 1:45-1:46-1:47-1:47-1:49 and 3 sub 4 guys that will be running outdoor. Flotrack has picked them to win NCAA outdoor track.
Amazing race, imagine if that 400 leg was up to par?? Oregon should have a 45.x relay man right?
With regard to shoes, they might be faster, they might not. There is currently no evidence besides anecdotes that they are. I have both the Dragonflys and Air Zoom Victorys, and I'm not convinced they're any better than the Zoom Victory Elites.
Chiming in to mention that "Wesfly" and their "CEO" Everett Smulders were so far off the pace they didnt even get any screentime.

Reed Brown split a 2:52 for the Oregon B relay. Crazy to think that that's not good enough to make the A relay
