I cannot believe the amount of pure misogyny on this discussion post. It's appalling to me that someone could type these words and not see anything wrong with them. Not to mention other posts saying

"Who are the men (runners) who seek attention similarly? Or do only women seek attention? I really don’t know."

Have some respect/decency or just say you hate women and move on. It's unbelievably difficult to speak out on matters like this (because people respond in this way) and that's exactly why reporters are writing about it, in an attempt to support the people who actually decide to tell their stories.

But if she was on a bus with all other athletes that is a different story then him buying her a ticket and dumping her on a regular gethound bus- that’s two different stories. Mary’s stories tend to be extreme versions of what happens (which are her interpretation of what happend). But it’s also why her parents should have known she was ready to fly across the country and joint adults training group. She hadn’t succeeded on any team as a teammate before, she went there thinking everyone would love her and think she was awesome - and they were adults trying to earn a living - she wasn’t ready to be an adult and that is her parents fault

Agreed, and in the environment, they were in, it just added to their mental (and in Mary's case, physical) stress and caused further problems down the road.

- you don't know what actually happened, beyond her accounts and others, so to say its extreme is absurd

- she was plenty successful at Bronxville early in her career running relays with teammates?

- how do you even respond to "thinking everyone would love her think that she was awesome"

Salazar just DID NOT get it, and you cannot pin the blame on Mary or her parents for that. I do agree that her parents should have snooped around a bit more on the shady stuff at NOP, but to victim-blame Mary is pathetic and par for the course for some of trash posters here.

Anyway, again you miss the point or you troll like you do, its about the overall pattern of treatment and abuse. Breaking down toxic power structures that allow for abusive relationships IS A GOOD THING

Shining light on these instances HELPS OTHERS in similar situations. Vocalizing things that we previously covered up in society helps us progress and not commit the same injustices in the future. Its like anything that was previously stigmatized or swept under a rug.

Since you didn't read the article how do you know she was complaining about a greyhound bus? There was one line about taking a bus but the bus was not the issue. Salazar sent her alone to a WC meet where she would be representing her country. How many college coaches would do that? If he didn't want to go himself couldn't he have sent an assistant or even a older athlete on the team? The meet was just down the road.

I think she mentioned it as an example that she did not really feel supported.

She won the f**king world junior championships 3k that year. She has nothing to complain about.

If Salazar was so bad to her, why hasn't she run any personal best times since leaving him? If he was an evil sexist fat-shaming monster, clearly she would have run significantly faster after leaving that toxic environment.

Yeah Jabouko, I suppose you are right. Just because I rolled my eyes a bit at the headline and photo doesn’t mean I had to be so critical—better to have said nothing and moved on to a ranking of all-time U.S. high school mid/long distance phenoms (Cain #2 behind Ryun?) or something.

Of all the articles in all the magazines, this one’s not so bad.

Instead of purging myself of all hate though, I’d like to state for the record that I think post-retirement Nick Symmonds (i.e. a man) is a pathetic embarrassment who should look for a real job.

I’ve taken antidepressants for 8-9 years and struggled with addiction for longer than that. I thought about killing myself every day of December 2020 and if I didn’t have loving and supportive parents I may have “been able to”—so it must be terribly hard to face those issues and have lost your mother to them in childhood.

Coaches work for the athletes who pay for their services. Cain should have fired Salazar for ditching his responsiblities. All that training and he can't find the time to go to the actual race. The world is upside down.

I understand but cannot entirely relate to your struggle, it has been a difficult winter for me as well.

I hope you have someone to talk to like Alexi and Mary, I bottled stuff up for a while but speaking to friends (and helping them with their own issues) has worked for me esp during dark winters

On a lighter note perhaps a post on the 5000/10000 fields for the Olympics? My biggest issue is figuring out which event the East Africans will be assigned to/are trained best for

I know you're trolling but cmon, its not exactly rocket science. winning isnt everything obviously, and if you think it is youre pretty stupid.

you need time to recover from mistreatment and abuse. her body was damaged and her mental state was not in the place to run, its so crazy to me that you all brush this stuff off - our sport is as much mental as it is physical at every level, from youth and HS through elites and masters athletes.

You got it, but I’m gonna do it in the fashion where I post full “results” down to the hundredth, replete with kilometer or lap-by-lap splits, which tends to annoy people—“Who do you think you are, Nostradumbass?”

Neither of these women make money from racing.
