You and I both know that’s not true. 4:00 for 1500m and 37th place at your conference meet isn’t “fair success”. Please post a link to your results.

As a slow hobby jogger who never ran even in HS, but does have school pride, is it ok that I buy shirts from my college alma mater and train in them? I didn't get it for free, but it's the same stuff?

Anyway I'm from a smallish town and every year at one of our only races (5k) all the current and recently graduated athletes, (as well as a a few oldies) roll up in school kit and duke it out. About 20 of us total and I always found it fun! It's a super casual event, hand timed no starting gun, the course isn't even 5k but its always a nice little talking point after the race to ask about peoples seasons and the hs kids who are looking at choosing schools can ask some college runners about the programs. I think it can do more good than harm!

I love this! You actually turned OP's toxicity into a new perspective I hadn't considered!

I graduated with something like 30 track and field/cross country shirts from college. A huge percentage of the exercise wardrobe after graduation. Nothing wrong with wearing them. I agree you can move past it and get some other stuff so you don't wear the college stuff every single day. But nothing wrong with wearing some of your clothes from time to time. Especially if you're only one year or two years out of college. Why buy a whole new set of clothes when your college stuff is only a year or two old?

I’ve worn my old high school and college singlet during a few turkey trots. Many others do too.

I think it shows your support for the school, as well as inspires younger runners to continue with the sport.

I did that in my 20s, too, and I look back at that with embarrassment. Flag wearers/wavers come off as make cheerleaders, I wish someone had asked me, "what are you getting out of that ridiculous, tasteless getup?"

Seriously. I put 5 years of my life into XC/TF at a Big Ten school. It changed my life in so many ways... ways I can't comprehend. We all worked our asses off. Our head coach was an amazing man who put so much time into our program and I still owe him to this day for shaping my life. Why would I NOT honor that?

I proudly wore my university's singlet at two major marathons (Chicago and NYC) and hearing alumni cheer for me - who had no clue who I was - was so motivating. Alumni are proud of their schools and love seeing it represented in a positive way.

Heck, I even wore my high school singlet at a 5K race that honored a former XC runner who passed away far too young.

So strange that you would be triggered by something that is a source of pride for a lot of runners.

Do you also get upset about people wearing sports jerseys with for a team they never played for? If so, then do you go ballistic when you see someone wearing a jersey with a professional player’s name on it?

Thank God someone from the fashion police has descended on the racing community. If we are not to wear our old school singlets at races, then could you please give us some advice and direction on what singlets to wear, as well as coordinating with shorts, socks and shoes. None of us want to appear tasteless or pathetic when you could enlighten us about road racing high style and fashion.

Asking for a friend, if one was originally from Detroit and something of an Eddie Murphy fan, would it be fashionably appropriate to wear a singlet that said "Mumford" on it, or is the fashion prohibition on school singlets absolute? Also, would I, excuse me, would my friend be dating himself by explaining he is an Eddie Murphy fan?

Perhaps you could post a picture of yourself in fashionably current racing kit as an example for us?
