This is the case wherever you go. People pining for a time that never really existed. I call it the Happy Days Effect---the belief there was some time in the past when everything was perfect.

Denver worse than NYC but way better than Philly. I suggest you stay away from Phoenix...

You are right. Good name for it too. People always want things to be like they were. Erroneous romanticizing of the past. There are a lot of people in this country, and most congregate to cities. Anyone who wants fewer people, move to the boonies. Those areas exist.

Yep, my dad lives in Boise. He says the same thing. Tons of Californians flocking there.

Is there anywhere in the US that isn’t blown out with people anymore? Even MT, WY, and ID are filled up. AK is all that’s left for a man who needs space and wild country.

What you are describing is "initial harmony". Most of HCA fairy tales fit a PROPP-R template including the initial harmony.

TBH, it's the people who were already living in Boulder who ruined it. They supported the policies the past few decades that predictably drove up housing prices to exclusionary levels and changed the civic flavor for their own profit. The ruination was by the hand of Boulderites. And to your point, Boulder pre-1990 (the magic cut-off for many) would have been sans Mountain Sun or Avery. I guess Boulder Beer and Coors is good enough for some.

Plenty of places to enjoy peace and quiet in the outdoors all over the country. Was just in Roanoke VA this week. Did a 20 mile out and back on the AT the other day. Started at 6am. Saw 2 groups of hikers the first 4 miles. No one for the next 6 out to the turnaround then only 6 groups the rest of my run. And that is on the AT which is about as busy a trail as you can find usually. So yeah there are plenty of places you can get solitude and enjoy the outdoors. Some of them are probably just a little further from a major airport than you would like.

Bozeman, Mt may be an option. It was very small 20 years ago, right about time boulder was getting overrun. Now Bozeman is about where Boulder was 20 years ago. The thing is Bozeman has very cold winters compared to boulder so it will never reach the state of boulder today. It’s still overpriced but hey like another poster said there aren’t any great places left that people don’t know about.

BINGO!!!!!!! All these folks complaining are the ones who want their 2 bedrooms homes they bought for $70k to sell for $800,000. so they can retire!

Well, that's exactly right. I live in Fort Collins CO and the winters are mild compared to Bozeman, or anywhere in Montana or Wyoming. There is a reason that Wyoming only has 500,000 residents. The wind never stops blowing and the winters are endless. Montana is like Wyoming without the wind.

If you want isolation in the west, try St. George, UT or Grand Junction CO, or Moab UT. Small communities that are a long way from a major airport. Problem is, there isn't much to do there. But, the traffic is light and the crime is low.
