It is pretty easy (i.e. if you wrote it up for a workout for something like 1200 in 3:00, 2x400 in 58 it would be hard but you would expect them to do it) for a 4:00 guy to crank out a 2:59 1200. Now if the guy has the sense of pace to be able to do it or if you get a the old 57,61,61 pacing is a different story.

Easton just did a super hard workout that definitely shows he can break 4. 2x800,400,200 at dub 4 pace for all the reps. Very impressive.

je just did a workout of 800-400-200 (and repeat) at essentially 4 minute pace with 2 minutes between and then full rest before second set.

Easton probably has a better shot than Cole to break 4, but both could do it. It is a shame Cruz isn't going.
I don't know if any of these guys are likely to do it, this spring. It seems like Coie Sprout would have the best as he split 4:30/4:19 with a 59 last quarter and 2:05 last half mile.

But most of these kids seem like either future 5K/10K specialists or under-developed (so far) milers.
Glad they are doing it. WHy not?!
Check Thomas Boyden's Strava. He seems pretty confident and his workouts are sexy. He also smoked Easton Allred when they race only a couple months ago. Sprout is clearly in great shape, as is Daschbach. If Strangio isn't there, I'd say that Sprout takes it, Daschbach and Boyden are really close for 2nd/3rd, all 3 sub-4. Allred next, probably toast from running sub-4 pace for longer than he can hold and blowing up, so his time won't be amazing. The other kids in the field aren't nearly as impressive.
I predict that 3 will run 3:59. I hope it counts.

Strangio being injured is the story behind the story. This is exactly why this whole thing is stupid. All these "look at me, look at me" time trials and dumb. Does any D1 coach want to see potential recruits out there busting miles for no reason at all? Portland should reconsider his scholarship.

1) You’re right, these kids should have just packed in their senior track seasons and not tried to drum up any excitement or fulfillment with their “look at me” time trials.
2) You’re right, no D1 coach would want a self-motivated athlete setting up a race to shoot for his goals. I’d much rather recruit someone who just packed it in since if there is no race there is no point in training hard.
3) Totally, Portland should take his scholarship away. Better yet, rescind his letter of admission. Ban them all from college.

Just because you’re not having your kids do it, doesn’t mean it’s dumb. If they want to do it, they should. For them, maybe there is a reason. Maybe seeing how fast they can run is what motivates them. Maybe it’s just fun.

You're right. Training to the point of injury so you can run a time trial is exactly what a coach wants to see. I stand corrected.
I don't want to jinx the kid, but rumor around Sac is that Salcido was running workouts with Matt and in shape to run very fast. That 4:17 pr was from the first meet of the season this year. Doubt that he'll break 4 but he might surprise some people

Because all coaches want to see high school kids running insane VO2 max workouts instead of racing a mile. Smart decision is to skip the race and bang out a 3k time trial, then a bunch of 400’s. Way less risky than racing a mile for sure.
Most of these kids seem to be fairly moderate in terms of training and happen to be doing a couple races or time trials. They are racing way less than if there was an actual season. I don’t think there are any alarm bells going off due to this race on Saturday.
