I hate dopers and I am in favor of lifetime bans, however, I am also a hater of violence. Having watched that video, I am stunned by what that French official did. That is assault and has no place in this sport. It would have been far better to have simply ignored Hirt in the results. Hideous behavior. Our sport has a bad history with authoritarian rule by people who do not have the best interest of athletes in mind, and videos such as this prove to me that we have made no progress. Of course--I also think that Hirt should be banned for life as a doper--but that is a separate issue.

The official was probably trying to protect the "honor of the race" by not letting the guy just finish out and ignore the result. Reminds me of when retired Tour de France winner Bernard Hinault tackled a guy off the podium a few years back when he tried to run across it for some reason.

What part of "Had not qualified for the event and was not even registered with a club" do you fail to comprehend? If you don't like having people forcibly removed from races they had not qualified for and had been told they could not run, please work to get national federations to remove qualifying standards and official entry lists from races.

Bottom line, he wasn't qualified for the race, he was TOLD he couldn't race, he forced his way into the race anyways, and paid the price. You jump out into a football game and take the ball because you want to play, you will get your tackled and beaten by security too.

That doping French cheat has like zero reflexes. The EPO must have really fckd up his reaction time. To not see some fat official come and kick his legs from underneath him as he was running towards him!

I feel bad that Jock Semple is known for this incident more than anything. Most accounts of Semple that I have read over the years indicate that he was a great guy who gave a lot to the sport.
