Canova Link to Current Italian Runners?

Baldini is better than all American marathoners (excepting Khannouchi). Longo is also more competitive (actually making the final of the world chapmpionships) than American 800m runners (of course he did serve out a drug suspension).

I am looking for all the Italians who are beating down the doors to learn Canova's methods.

Why are the no Italians running faster than Trackhead ran in the 10K 25-30 years ago?

What particular technique advocated by Canova, do the Italians draw the line and refuse to do?

Please name a CURRENT Italian he coaches that can run a 5K or a 10K faster than Trackhead ran 25-30 years ago?

He has been well known in running circles in Italy for more than 25 years, yet no Italians with talent go near him.

What risk do Italians fear that the dirt poor Kenyans are willing to take?

Is it Italians won't risk the possible consequences of say running 120 miles a week? How risky is that? What is the worst thing that could happen to an Italian who does that?

Or is it some other risk that the Italians won't take, that the Kenyans are willing to go for. Maybe the Italians consider running hard track workouts after developing a good base to be too risky?

Help me out here?

i think he wants CURRENT italian runners.

while the tradition of the italians has been good the italian distance runners haven't been the cleanest athletes around either. their whole federation was a bit crooked, from sprinters and jumpers to even officials.

Let me ask you, If I could coach a teenager to run 26:30 for 10K in his first serious attempt, wouldn't I be able to coach at least one of the 50 million Italians to run say 28:30?

Please help me out? What will the teen Kenyan do, that Italians consider to risky? I am totally mystified. Help me see the light.

What you are basically asking is why are there no new male Italian distance running stars?

You could ask the same question about other European countries and America too. The answer is simple, young runners from non African countries either don't train as hard (or as much) or they do other sports.

Renato has actually posted on this very subject. Basically the Italians just don't want it anymore. If they don't want to try, why coach them? Look at his old posts. He does more than just hint at why.

So it is just training hard? It is that simple? So there are no Italians willing to train hard? Can't anyone train hard? Are you saying the Italians are too lazy to train hard or too stupid to know that training hard is the secret?

Training hard sounds like an awful simple "formula" to me. Why didn't dummies like Kip Keino figure that out and run 3:26 instead of 3:34? What about Ben Jip*o. If he had thought to train hard he would have run 7:54, not 8:15. What about Kenyan Olympic champion Neftali Temu. If he knew about this hard training secret, he too could have run 26 for 10K instead of 29.

Now we may get getting closer to some answers.

Let me ask you, would you rather coach a 28:30 type or a 26:30 type? As an American coach(I assume you're American), would you rather coach Mutua(1:43), Shaheen(12:48), Kwalia(12:54), and Kemboi(26:30) or Derek Peterson, Robison, Krumenacker, Slattery, and Torres?

Nationalism aside, as a coach you've got to go where the talent is and where the desire is.

Also, I have no idea if thise Italians are currently competing or if these are old perfomrances, but I saw this from Canova on another thread...

I'm the coach of many top athletes, the most part are kenyans.....and of course many Italians (Giacomo Leone 2:07:52 in Marathon, Rachid Berradi 60:20 and Michele Gamba 61:04 in HM, the italian record holder of 10000m and Marathon Maura Viceconte 31'05"57 and 2:23:47, and in the past the bronze medal in WCH '95 Ornella Ferrara and the silver medal in EuCH '94 Maria Curatolo).

Training smart and hard and appropriate for the times needed to be competitive. By your logic records would have stagnated in the 30's. What was judged as hard 30 years ago may today be seen as unstructured and non-specific to fast racing. In fact training from 15 years ago is a bit outdated. Renato's training to me looks simpler and more specific. It actually looks easier on the body. Do the least amount needed to get the job done. The days of running yourself into the ground and more is better are over.

Maybe what you said about Italians of today is true. I know that in Liquori's time the Italians were always complaining that they weren't competitive. It was pointed out to them that they should quit smoking for a start... Running prowess in a nation comes in waves. Like the Finns, the Italians will be back.

Last year...

Kenyan-born athletes held 6 of the top 15 times in the 800m. Ethiopia 0.

Kenyan-born athletes held 10 of top 15 times in the 5,000m. Ethiopia had 3.

Kenyan-born athletes held 9 of the top 15 times in the 10,000m. Ethiopia had 4.

Kenyan-born athletes held 10 of the top 15 times in the steeple. Ethiopia had 0.

Kenyan-born athletes held 8 of the top 15 times in the 1500m. Ethiopia had 0.

Renato coaches at least a half-dozen of these Kenyan athletes. Also, coaching Ethiopians may be more difficult since many of them don't learn English in school, as the Kenyans do.
