Important Conference On Athlete’s Heart, Sudden Death and Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy June 26-27, 2009

April 16, 2009 - We recently received an email from former Zac Fitness runner Caroline Cretti who wanted to let us know of a very important conference her sister is involved with hosting at Stanford University on June 26-27, 2009. The topic to be covered is Athlete’s Heart, Sudden Death and Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. Given the sad deaths recently of runners in their prime such as Travis Landreth and Ryan Shay, we definitely thought this conference is something the LetsRun.com community would be interesting in learning more about.

To see the official, "Save the Date" brochure, click here. Space is limited. Pre-Registration is recommended. To pre-register, you can contact Terra Coakley at tcoakley@stanford.edu or 650-725-6186.

You can find more info from two emails we received below.

Hi Robert and Weldon,

My name is Caroline Cretti, and I used to run for a division 3 school (Williams College) before joining ZAP Fitness through the spring of 2008.  I am familiar with your website and with the impression/impact it makes on the running community--which is why I thought you and your website might be a fantastic venue to promote a conference on cardiomyopathy/Athlete's Heart at Stanford University this summer.

My sister is actually one of the people organzing the conference and asked me to send it to members/organziations involved in the running community that would be interested--not for sponsorship or funding or anything, just so people in the community know it is happening and can attend. (She obviously is not a part of the community herself, since it is schedualed during US Championships in June...)  I think ideally, the invitiation/information would be posted on your website and/or sent to anyone you think might be interested--but obviously, how it is handled is completely up to you!

I have included the official letter below and attatched the "save the date" with more information.  Let me know if I can answer any questions or feel free to contact anyone listed below.

Thank you so much, I hope you are both doing well.

Sincerely,

Caroline Cretti

Dear Robert and Weldon Johnson,

We are running a very ambitious conference in June (June 26-27, 2009) here at Stanford University in California, USA on the topic of Athlete’s Heart, Sudden Death and Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.  We have compiled a very prestigious group of speakers from all over the United States, as well as Europe.  We were wondering how we would get our conference information, as well as our “Save the Date” either posted on your website or sent out to supporters/contacts of Letsrun.com.  Could you lead me in the right direction?  Here in the United States, the ACC (American College of Cardiology), ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) and AACVPR (American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation) have told us to just give them our “Save the Date” and they will email it to their members and/or post it on their website—we were wondering if you would do the same?  Companies in the UK (through BASES) and the Australian Institute of Sports have listed our conference, as well.

This is such an important topic—and one where information is crucial for both the athletes and for the programs, like yours, involved with competitive sport.  I haven’t met a cardiologist or sports medicine physician who hasn’t been interested or concerned with the topic of Athlete’s Heart, Sudden Death, or Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, and this conference is a chance for all of the different parties to come together and learn about this condition that has so affected the running community.

I have attached the “Save the Date” to this email.  Please let me know if you have any questions or need anything further from us.

Best,

Elizabeth Cretti
