Alan
Webb victoriously returned to the NYC's famous New Balance Armory
Center six years to the date, when he became the first American HS
student to break the four minute barrier indoors. Closely following the
rabbits, thru splits of 58.7/1.58.7, before taking the lead with Eliud
Ngubi at1000 meters.
Looking extremely relaxed and strong he breezed thru the 1200 in 2.58.7
and closed off with a stong 200m in 28 flat. Alan glaced at the clock
as he came across the tape as he was a time in the 3.56.70 PR Alan
spoke at length about the race saying "The race went out alittle slow,
but it was even which set up well for a strong finish"
Alan choose the New Balance Armory Center to run his indoor PR, noting
it was the same event six years ago when becoming Americas most famous
miler since Jim Ryan,"It's fun to run in this facility because everyone
knows my history and I feel very welcome here" Webb is expected to run
in all 3 of USATF's indoor events
On the womans mile side, Mary Cullen(IRE) was a revelation in a rare
mile appearance showing alot of strength. The womans event was a large
pack led by Carmen Douma-Hussar(CAN) followed by Sara Hall(USA),
Hillary Stellingwerff(CAN)and then Mary. With 400 meters to go, Mary
went from 5th to 1st and in the final pulsating 100 meters she held off
the late rush of the other 3. "My goal was to finish in the top 5 here,
my focus is still 3k/5k. But it's nice to do the mile to get that
sharpness, you need to good run a good mile to run a good 3k/5k"
The New Balance Games again was sold out and everyone left with a buzz
of what Alan Webb will be able to do this year, and saw a great race
from Mary Cullen
