2007 Footlocker Quick Boys Recap: Midwest Champ Michael Fout Wins
Midwest Region Dominates
by: LetsRun.com
December 8, 2007
*Girls Recap and Results here

Boys will be boys.

Any thoughts that the boys would learn from Jordan Hasay's suicidal start in the girls race, and start conservatively were quickly thrown out the window when West runner-up Luke Puskedra took out the first 800 in 2:10. He hit the mile in 4:28. It didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the pace was way too fast. LetsRun.com coaching guru John Kellogg summed it up best by saying, "If he wins the thing I’d be shocked.”

At the mile, Puskedra was closely followed by South champ Colby Lowe, Midwest sixth placer Kevin Williams, Footlocker West champ and pre-race favorite German Fernandez, and Northeast champ Donn Cabral. The pace slowed dramatically during the 2nd hilly mile. 1.5 miles was hit in roughly 7 flat and 2 miles was hit in 9:28.

By 2 miles, Midwest regional champ Mike Fout, who had stayed just off the pace at the crazy start, had joined the 3 other regional champs and Puskedra to form a 5 man lead pack. Early in the third mile, Fout made a move for glory and quickly gapped everyone else in the lead back. The other 4 had no response.

Just when it appeared to be over, Nike Team Nationals individual champ and Midwest runner-up Chris Derrick, who didn't go with the early suicidal pace, came up hard from the back. Would his smart running pay off with a national title?

Derrick quickly caught up and dispatched the tiring foursome of Fernandez, Lowe, Cabral and Puskedra. He was gaining on Fout. Just when it looked like Derrick might do it, one realized there was only 400 meters left. Derrick had run out of real-estate. The gap was down to roughly 5 seconds but the Florida State bound Fout had plenty in reserve for his finishing kick and powered home for the national title, crossing the line in 14:48. Derrick finished second as the Midwest region went 1-2 and had an absolutely dominating day as the Midwest took 5 of the top 10 positions.

In the post-race interview on the live webcast, Fout's coach said they were expecting a very fast pace and he told Fout to stay 3 to 5 seconds off the lead at the mile and move up. His coach was pleased that the plan worked to perfection.

Pre-race favorite German Fernandez finished third.
