184 E. German Athletes to Get 30,000 Euros From German Olympic Committee, Pharmaceuticl Firm, and Insurance Companies A reader has sent us an update from the trade press, SCRIP World Pharmaceutical News, on East German athletes being compensated for systematic doping during communist rule in the country. We linked to a story in December on the E. German Olympic Committee giving 167 athletes 9,250 euros as compensation for being doped under the guidance of governmental sports authorities. The SCRIP World Pharmaceutical News story says 184 athletes will in addition be compensated 10,000 Euros by the pharmaceutical firm, Jenapharm, and roughly that same amount from insurance companies, so the total amount of compensation for these athletes will be roughly 30,000 Euros (some reports say everyone will get 9,250 euros 3 times) Jenapharm produced Turinabol, a synthetic male hormone which was popular with athletes because it "encouraged quality muscle gain without water retention problems" and broke down quickly after ingestion so it was hard to detect. Some 10,000 athletes may have been doped in E. Germany in an attempt to win Olympic medals, some with very serious side affects. Not sure if financial compensation can make up for their troubles, but it's a step in the right direction.
