Galen Rupp Breaks Gerry
Lindgren's High School 5k Record The Alberto Salazar protégé, Galen Rupp, shattered the oldest United States high school track and field record by running a huge pr of 13:37.91 for 5000m in the "B" race at the KBC Night of Athletics Meeting in Heusden-Zolder, Belgium to finish 11th. Rupp broke Gerry Lindgren's record of 13:44.0 set in 1964. Rupp's record also is a US junior record as it bettered Franklin Sanchez's 13:38.59 from 2001. Rupp, who has had the backing of the Nike Oregon Project and Salazar's coaching for the last couple of years, previously had run a personal best of 13:52.85 for 9th at the World Junior Championships in Grosseto, Italy. He along with some of the Nike Oregon project athletes he trains with, are now on a European tour. Dathan Ritzenhein, provisionally on the US 10,000m squad in Athens, was the only athlete to seriously challenge Lindgren's record since 1964 running 13:44.70 at the 2001 USA Championships. Lindgren is arguably the greatest US high school distance runner ever finishing 9th in the 1964 Olympics at 10k after winning the US Olympic Trials. Rupp failed to qualify for this year's nationals but has made the most of his season since then. He plans on not running collegiately and continuing to run under Alberto Salazar next year. Another Salazar athlete, Dan Browne, had a big breakthrough on Saturday running 5k in 13:16.02 for 8th in the "A" race. Browne will run the marathon and 10k at the Olympics. His previous best was 13:28.24 in 1998. For more on the great night for US distance
