Update on Track & Field News Falling Prey To Internet Hoax October 3, 2002 In case you missed it, yesterday we reported that on page 36 of the newest Track and Field News, it says "Ivy League officials are considering withdrawing their schools from NCAA Div. 1 competition and moving to Div. III reports the New York Times." The only problem is this story never appeared in the NYTimes. What apparently happened is that a poster on the LetsRun.com messageboards posted a fake article on our site and Track and Field News fell prey to the hoax as they didn't double check the information. Understandably, many coaches in the Ivy League don't think
this is just a joking matter. Today Brett Hoover, Assistant
Director for The Ivy League, issued the following statement
to the Sports Information Directors of The Ivy League
regarding the matter. They, in turn, have asked us to
republish it here. Track & Field News admits that they have since discovered that this was an internet hoax and the magazine will run a retraction in the next issue as well as distribute written apologies to the coaches from the League. That report NEVER ran in the New York Times, which is working to track the source of the information. If you are called regarding this matter, it is 100 percent untrue." Thus it looks like things are getting straightened out but who knows if the creator of the hoax will face legal penalties. |
