Graham named Nike Coach of the Year from USATF KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Trevor Graham, the coach of U.S. superstars Marion Jones and Tim Montgomery, on Wednesday was named 2002 Nike Coach of the Year by USA Track & Field. Graham will receive the award Friday night at the Jesse Owens Awards Dinner and Xerox Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, held at USATF's 2002 Annual Meeting in Kansas City, Mo. USATF's 2002 Jesse Owens Award winners, Jones and Montgomery, are two of the most gifted athletes in track and field, but they both give the credit for their success to the same man: Graham. "I am honored to accept this award," said Graham. "This is a great opportunity for coaches to be recognized for accomplishments. Thanks to Nike 's sponsorship, this award is something that coaches can strive for." Graham since 1997 has guided Jones to five Olympic medals, five World Championships gold medals and 12 U.S. Outdoor titles. In 2002 she had her first-ever undefeated season, dominating the world in the 100 meters, winning the 100/200 double at the USA Championships, and winning the 200 whenever she chose to take the track. Observing Jones' success, Montgomery joined Graham's Raleigh, N.C.-based training group in 1999. The move paid huge dividends. Two years later, in 2001, he won his first U.S. championship; three years later he has become the World's Fastest Human by running 9.78 seconds for 100 meters. "USATF congratulates Trevor on a tremendous year," USATF CEO Craig Masback said. "Marion's incredible success and the progress Tim has made in the last three years speak volumes." "Nike is proud to congratulate Trevor as the Nike Coach of the Year honor," said John Capriotti, Global Sports Marketing Director of Nike. "His passion and commitment to the sport throughout the years have earned our respect and best wishes for his future in the sport." Subscribe to a Great Magazine that supports the top end of the
