Is this a misunderstanding of tempo? Crazy stuff. I think there's something to be said for a bit of quality going into race week but that seems crazy.

Also surprising that he never runs more than 30K in training
Shitara
Height -1.70cm
Weight-48kg
Low BMI.
Inoue, 2.06.54 -1.65, 51kg - more stocky with muscle definition.
"Tiny Island"?
How ignorant is the author. Japan has close to 130 million in population, top 10 in the world.

Hell of a fighter too, Inoue.
What's extra crazy is that 30K is the longest run he does, and it's a tempo?!?!
warm up + 30k at marathon pace, he calls it tempo

That would be brutal three days before the race. Hard enough in any case. Very strange if true.
the article is wrong, it's 3 weeks before the race
Why would it be a misunderstanding of tempo?
It's Brett Larner's translation and paraphrasing of a Japanese TV show, nothing should be taken literally.

Here's the quote:
"He said he does a lot of quality and always does a 25-30 km tempo run three days before a marathon, something that doesn’t fit any of the usual stereotypes at all. "
Change it to three weeks before, and that makes it very normal. A lot of runners do a fast long run 3 weeks before a marathon. Not remarkable at all. Why would he even mention it? 25-30km tempo run three weeks out isn't newsworthy.
Perhaps he actually does it 3 days before. Otherwise, Larner wouldn't have mentioned it.

Hanson's specs 18 miles as the longest. More quality than quantity. Not crazy at all. Do we have any more details on the whole of his training? I find myself asking for more information here.
He trains for 7 days a week, no rest days. He does 3 quality days a week, 2 easy doubles and 2 easy singles. In total he runs between 100 and 150 mpw. Yes, max is 150! He does that tempo 3 DAYS before the race and after that he follows it with 2 full rest days, just some strides, few minutes, 24h before the race.
I wonder how he even came up with that 30K/3 days prior strategy. Maybe he ran well when other races were closely placed against each other and then made it a routine? I have run an 800m PR off a 400m time trial a few days before but 30K/42K at such a high level is honestly beyond my comprehension. Sounds like something Derek Clayton might have done.
Yuki of course also runs impressive back-to-back efforts as far as races. The Japanese have a unique work ethic and strategy with marathons.

But the actual country is quite small even if it has loads of people living in it.

Fun fact: Japan has an urban area (Tokyo-Yokohama) that is more populous than Canada.

True. Calling Japan a tiny island is a bit like saying that running a sub 4-minute mile during a 10,000 meter race is commonplace these days.

And apparently is about the size of California. Honshu is the seventh largest island
