How out of it am I going to be? Will I hate myself for not seeing the first ones first? Basically all I know from common knowledge is that Darth Vader is Luke's father, Luke kissed Leia and then found out she's his sister, Yoda talks dyslexic and R2D2 talks in beeps and boops. How much will this ruin my life?
It's not a big deal. This movie is the same as two out of the six.

I think this is interesting. For most of us that have seen the movie, its hard to figure out how good or bad this movie actually is as a stand alone movie. Seeing the previous movies may have let this new one ride on too much insider knowledge and nostalgia.
After you see it, let us know what you think. I think the pacing was a bit off and wonder if that's because they may have cut out 30-45 minutes of the movie so it could fit into a movie theatre schedule. But then again my judgement may be clouded.
It doesn't matter. Go see it - it's good.
The only thing you'll miss are little inside jokes that only half the fans will catch anyways.

I'd recommend you find some that summarize the original three: Episode 7 starts somewhere after the original Episode 3 ends. Episode 3 was the one with Ewoks... I can't remember the name.
Episode 3 was Return of the Jedi. Watch a summary of it and the two previous ones and you should know all you really need to know.

Episode 3 is not Return of the Jedi. Episode 6 is Return of the Jedi. Episode 3 is Revenge of the With.
Don't feel too badly. I saw Apollo 13 without seeing the twelve prequels.

Don't bother going back, you will actually enjoy it more. Everyone is raving about the movie, but for those of us who have seen at least the first 3 episodes only give it a B.
Millions upon millions of people saw 4-6 without seeing 1-3; I think you'll be fine.
Also, from what I could tell, you didn't really need to know anything about the previous six to understand what was going on.
Well, turns out we looked at the wrong movie for showtimes and got there a half hour late. Went to Daddy's Home instead. 10/10 would watch again. Star Wars can be seen another day.

That's why I never saw "Malcolm X". I hadn't seen the first 9 and would have been behind.

They say it's a good movie standalone but idk
I hadn't really seen the first 6 ... well, maybe one of the prequels and parts of the originals. But I enjoyed it as a standalone with my Star Wars nerd wife.
You have to watch episodes 1-6. Here is how the average star wars super fan would rank them. Okay Best to Worst......... Episode 5,Episode 4,Episode 6,Episode 7,Episode 3,Episode 2,and last and definitely least Episode 1.
