Partly because the AMA prohibits doctors from participating in executions.
It'd probably be cheaper and equally effective to just inject the person with some bleach or ammonia.
A bullet to the head is a method of execution anyone can do and would be better for the prisoner... it is a painless method to die. The reason this method is not used is that the witnesses would not want to see blood splatter throughout the room.
We want death sanitized. A proper hanging or firing squad would do just fine.
I've served as a witness to a few executions. Yes, really, some states do allow for citizen witnesses. Lethal injection is typically a very quick and efficient way to execute an inmate. Well, it was, until the pharmaceutical companies were pressured to stop providing their medicines if they were to be used for executions.
Now states are having to scramble and experiment with whatever drugs they may be able to procure. I don't like this as they are going out on a limb to find mixtures that are lethal to the inmate while not being tortuous.
Electrocution works effectively on inmates. It isn't as dramatic as portrayed in the movies. The inmate is hit with that voltage and BAM they are brain dead. They don't catch fire usually - just a bit of water vapor from the leg electrode...

Why does the American government have to make everything so god damned expensive? We should MAKE money off of killing these people.
Have some janitor snap the criminal's neck and then feed the corpse to the homeless.
And while we're at it, let's force people in prison to WORK for their food and shelter. Hard labor or data entry. 80 hour work weeks, little food, and no TV.
And another thing, if we do all that I stated above, you had better believe that the "gangstas" on the street would stop viewing the "thug life" as cool because if caught, instead of spending a few years lifting weights with free food, drugs, and tv, they'll be forced to actually WORK for once in their life.

So you seem to be super cool with spending $50,000 per year per criminal providing food, shelter, tv, and weight equipment to these criminals.
This country is broke. Hmmm...I wonder where all the money is going?
How about the criminals work for us rather than us busting our butts for them. How does that sound? And when it's time to kill them, let's do it cheaply and recycle their corpses to feed the needy so these criminals can impact their society in a positive way at least once.
And don't think I'm just talking about making violent blacks into slaves. White collar criminals need to have their butts kicked DOUBLE. Make those egghead nerds sleep on the hard concrete floor and get humped by rats.

The problem with that kind of execution is you always risk some dashing hero riding in on his steed at the very last second, whisking the buxom accused away into the sunset.

The Constitution is for everyone in America, not just the law abiding.
I dont agree withe death penalty, but surely the guillotine has to be the best way to go.

Considered in the past but rejected on account of the witnesses who must be present.
Typically the French did it with a screen in front of the head area.
