Is there some kind of honest effort rule? It was hard to tell, but he seemed to basically pack it in after 2k or so. Maybe if he was really out there to set the pace for Hill and then literally jogged the rest of the way that violated a rule of some sort?
Odd. Rojo, what's the word over there?
what does it matter? the dude wasn't making the world team anyways...usatf is dumb

And why in the hell would he do this? Hill has a better kick than Rupp so the faster pace suits Rupp. Very odd.
think it was his cuboid.
Because sit and kick favors Lagat and keeps more runners in it at the end... Of course, the hard pace didn"t stop Lagat anyway.
Such BS. Why did he get DQed? Based on past performances, he should have been able to rabbit a 4:10 mile before tucking in behind Lomong and hanging tight. The way he bombed, he had to have been hurting. And regardless, he still finished the race and got 8th at USA nationals. That's an insult to everyone behind him to DQ him for not running fast enough. Unless something happened I don't know about.
Salazar wanted a DQ. That's all it takes really
Bumbalough, who ran the 2000m at the NYRR Millrose Games in New York one week ago, managed to stay on the lead through 2000m (5:13.1), but was clearly tiring. A lap later, he slowed as he came down the homestretch, making it difficult for other athletes to go by him (he was later disqualified for interference).

I don't know if it was the smartest idea (I dont see him as pacing his teammates it seemed more like a ballsy gambit) but dammit if it didn't make it more interesting.
Kudos to Bumby

Given how good Lagat looked in that 2k, the strategic focus should have been on beating Rupp. And the fast pace did not help Hill vis a vis Rupp.
Sometimes having weapons at your disposal causes you to fight the wrong battle.
So you think they went into the race thinking Lagat is out of reach?
whatever to days when Tennesseans had Pride in what they do?

They should have realized that a fast pace would never take the kick out of Lagat. That leaves one spot to fight for. Hill's best chance for that spot was to beat Rupp in a kick, not off a fast, sustained pace.
Coaches like to have their athletes "run as a team" but it doesn't always suit the situation.
Okay... I can buy that. But of course, running a kicker's race also leaves Lomong in it. And who says Hill can out kick Rupp off of a slower pace?

Lomong is on Hill's team, so that is not a strategic reason for the team to set a fast pace.
And, sure, Rupp might still beat Hill in a race that stayed bunched until near the end. It's a relative argument. I like Hill's chances better if he's not matching his endurance against Rupp's.
Lrc rupp haterz, that is who.
Okay. I guess maybe Bumby did it for him then. It's not like Lomong isn't going to kick in slow race even if they are on the same team. And no way anybody outkicks Lagat in a slow paced race. They must have hoped pushing the pace would take some sting out of Lagat's kick. I think that is actually a better strategy then looking to outkick Rupp off of a slow pace because Rupp can finish pretty darn well himself. A slower race leaves more people in it at the end.
They have to try to beat Rupp and Lagat some way. The "strength" runners in Shumacker's crew have no chance in a slow race, but only a slightly better chance in a fast race.
The problem with Bumbalough is that he needs to put in a fair effort in all championship races.
