We were reading Japan Running News today and it said Yuki Kawauchi ran 9 marathons this year and won 5 of them. We only know of 8 races and four wins.

2:12:51 14 Tokyo 26-Feb

2:22:38 1 Tsuchiura 15-Apr

2:12:58 8 Düsseldorf 29-Apr

2:13:26 4 Gold Coast 1-Jul

2:18:38 1 Sapporo 26-Aug

2:11:52 1 Sydney 16-Sep

2:10:29 6 Fukuoka 2-Dec

2:10:46 1 Hofu 16-Dec

What are we missing?

We know he ran and won an ultra in June - the Okinoshima 50 km Ultramarathon on June 17 in 2:51:45.

Is that #9 and #5? Or was there an actual marathon somewhere?

8 or 9, no matter which, it is impressive. Possibly there was a mistake, not a matter of concern. If there was a mistake, it demonstrates how impressive this was. He ran so many it was difficult to keep track. It is sort of like running long distances on a 400 meter track. After a while it is not easy to remember how many laps were completed.
