*heavy sigh*
Refitting just 1000 gas stations with 1 electrical charging station would crash the domestic U.S power grid and result in rolling brown outs nationwide.
The kinds of investments your 'ideas' require are on the orders of:
100 Billion over 10 years minimal on Electric power grid (not generation!)
200-300 Billion over 10 years minimal on power generation (to keep power rates constant)
10-20 Billion on the actual stations themselves.
You see the problem is not building the cars, or the stations, or even the concept itself, its the infrastructure, including grid and generation.
And this is hiwarious:
300 MPH maglev trains....rofl lol.
The energy required to power maglev trains at 300 mph is absurd.
Its cheaper relatively to pump oil at en EROEI of 8, refine the oil into Jet fuel and fly airplanes than it is to build a maglev train network that consistently runs trains at 300 mph.
Where does the power generation come from? Cow farts? Coal? Solar? Wind?
Lets assume Solar or Wind. Over the last 10 years 50+ billion have been invested directly worldwide into Solar and Wind power generation. Yet over that time, combined, Solar and Wind energy have only offset 2-3% of Power demand.
Even if we were to increase investment several fold in FY2010 dollars over the next 20 years (an amazing prospect given the deficits governments face worldwide) you would only offset another 20-30% of electrical demand in the most insanely outlandishly optimistic expectation yet you would still have a shortfall of potentially 10% because electrical demand continues to grow, and coal/natgas profitability decline. Adding 300MPH maglev trains and millions of electrical vehicles to the mix and the power grid would just collapse sometime around 2014-2015 on your little plan.
Not to mention you would fiscally bankrupt even the United States even if we shifted all defense spending to pay for your plan and raised taxes.
Furthermore, the massive investments would drain investments in other areas of the economy, which in this economic climate would be fatal.
Basically you don't have the power for the trains and cars and never will. If you try to build the trains and cars, you will be doing it for an economy that won't be there by the time you are finished. Even if you are able to get past both of these huge hurdles, there remains a motley of difficulties that for the sake of brevity I can't explain yet each one could literally derail everything.
One example: Rare Earth Metals. They aren't called rare earths for nothing. The magnets and superconductors required for maglevs will exhaust the world's supply of REM's. So no more computers or IPODs, or vastly more expensive, inefficient computers and IPOD's.
Economies of scale factor so much into your plan yet even the best models can not predict the outcome. You could use up all the world's lithium and nickel just to build batteries for your few million electrical cars. Tell the world there can only be 20 million electrical cars because of these issues. The world needs 200 million bare minimum to sort of exist as something maybe a shade near what it is today.
